The Flamethrower is one of the most fun and unique weapons in Helldivers 2, but it’s hard enough to use that we thought it deserved its very own ultimate guide.

If you’re eager to burn your foes to a crisp, we’ll give you various tips to help you make the most out of your Flamethrower!

Read on and we’ll tell you everything you should keep in mind as you deploy into Tien Kwan with a Flamethrower at the ready.

Ultimate Flamethrower Guide | Tips and Tricks to Cook Bugs Effectively

Direct Damage Is Important

Helldivers 2: Ultimate Flamethrower Guide - Direct Damage

While you might the Flamethrower is best played by just spraying fire around and setting enemies on fire, direct damage is actually much more important.

Sure, setting critters on fire and letting them burn to death slowly works. But for everything else, you’ll only really deal good damage whenever the flame stream from the Flamethrower connects.

This is particularly true when fighting some of the bigger enemies, such as the obnoxious Chargers.

As an example, Chargers themselves will barely take damage from burning. The only real way to take them down with your Flamethrower is to keep shooting at their weak spots.

Killing a Charger with the Flamethrower

This isn’t much different from using any other weapon, in that sense.

On the upside, Flamethrowers do have the advantage of ignoring armor. You can kill Chargers by shooting their weak legs even without shredding the armor first!

It’s also a good idea to use first-person aiming to make sure your flame stream hits where it should.

In summary, just make sure that you keep firing at enemies because burn damage itself is rather weak.

Be Wary of Bile Titans

Helldivers 2: Ultimate Flamethrower Guide - Bile Titans

Bile Titans are always a threat, there’s no doubt about that. But, Flamethrower users are at a big disadvantage in particular.

Not only is it risky to even get close to Bile Titans to begin with, but it seems the Flamethrower is currently incapable of dealing real damage to a Bile Titan.

Fire doesn't do anything against the Bile Titan

The Flamethrower can easily wreck the eggs and sacks on the Bile Titan, but nothing else.

Some players report going through 8 whole canisters worth of fuel just firing away at the Bile Titan with the Flamethrower and still not killing it!

Let other players deal with the Bile Titans or use Stratagems, like the new Exosuit Mechs, to fight them.

Close Range Is Ideal

Helldivers 2: Ultimate Flamethrower Guide - Range

The Flamethrower is, just like in almost every other piece of media out there, a close-range weapon.

Your deadly fire stream doesn’t have a long reach, so you’ll be at a huge disadvantage whenever enemies can out-range you.

This makes the Flamethrower particularly dangerous to use against Bot enemies. Bugs usually get into close range when attacking you, but Bots are good at keeping their distance.

Burning Swarmers at close range

There’s not much you can do about the short range either, besides making up for it with Stratagems like the Jump Pack.

By the same token, staying in close range against burning bugs can end up setting you on fire. Playing with fire is as dangerous as they say…

Nonetheless, it’s something extremely important to keep all of this in mind if you want to use this weapon as a main weapon!

Choose the Right Stratagems

Helldivers 2: Ultimate Flamethrower Guide - Stratagems

Based on our previous two points, you might have already noticed that Stratagems will make or break a Flamethrower loadout.

After all, you’ll need to pick the right ones to make up for the Flamethrower’s weaknesses compared to other guns!

These are some of the best Stratagems we recommend for Flamethrower users:

  • B-1 Supply Pack – Great for getting some extra fuel for the Flamethrower. It’s a very ammo-hungry weapon!
  • LIFT-850 Jump Pack – Can help you get in and out of close range, perfect for engaging and disengaging as needed.
  • A/MG-43 Machine Gun Sentry or A/G-16 Gatling Sentry – They can automatically shoot down enemies from range, making them great backups for a Flamethrower main.
  • Orbital Railcannon Strike or Eagle 500kb Bomb – Your go-to emergency Stratagems for dealing with Bile Titans in a pinch. Pick whichever one of the two you prefer.

Pack these Stratagems up alongside your Flamethrower and you’ll be sure to find success against the hostiles on Tien Kwan!
