A new seasonal activity called the Nightmare Containment has been introduced alongside Destiny 2’s Season 17, Season of the Haunted. In this activity, you will board the Derelict Leviathan to take part in the Containment which features 3 tiers and tons of exciting rewards upon completion.

If this is your first time taking part in this seasonal activity, then I suggest you continue reading.

Nightmare Containment Guide in Destiny 2

There are a total of 3 tiers in Nightmare Containment. The first two tiers will have you fighting through four separate phrases while the final tier contains a boss fight. One thing worth noting is that even if you fail to complete a tier, you’ll still be able to advance to the next.

To start, you’ll want to open your destination map and head over to the new Leviathan area. The default option will be Castellum, so you’ll want to click on that option and choose Containment instead. Click Launch when you’re ready.

Now that you’re inside, let’s have a look at the encounters in each tier.

Tiers 1 and 2

Since tiers 1 and 2 are essentially the same, I’ll just cover them both at once. In these tiers, you start by killing enemies and collecting Shards of Dread. Then, as you progress further, stronger enemies called Dread Bearers will start spawning. These enemies have massive health pools, so team effort is necessary to finish them off quickly.

Dread Bearers will drop a Core of Dread when killed. Once you loot this drop, you’ll need to take it back to the harvester to create a Scythe which has a very powerful slam attack as well as a long-ranged attack.

You want to use this weapon to kill off the other Dread Bearers as quickly as possible. Make sure to collect as many Shards of Dread during the allotted time.

Once you reach stage two, you’ll need to defeat two Psion and two Egregor Atavists. However, you have to deal with four Atavist Illusions first. The only way to kill the Atavists is to get inside their bubble and melee them.

If you managed to kill them, a Cabal Nightmare boss will spawn. The boss has two phases, and you’ll be able to tell if it’s on phase 2 already when it puts its shield on. To break it, you have to destroy the Darkness Crux and then deal with the boss shortly after.

The entire Tier 2 encounter is pretty much the same. The only difference is that enemies are more challenging to fight and you’ll have to deal with even more Dread Bearers. After you complete both tiers, you’ll then move to the third one.

Tier 3

Tier 3 will pit you against the boss of this week which is Nightmare of Elykris, The Machinist. Do keep in mind that the boss changes every week, switching from a variety of bosses in the rotation.

The encounter starts by killing off a handful of adds and damaging the boss until it reaches roughly 60% health. When it does, it will gain a shield which you can break by destroying six Resonant Splinters throughout the area.

Once destroyed, the boss will spawn two Emissaries who you have to kill as well. Until then will you be able to deal damage to the boss again. Just keep on repeating the process until the boss gets to around 30% health.

Since there’s a time limit, you have to make sure to kill the boss before time runs out.

Secret Chests

There are several secret Opulent chests you can come across during the Nightmare Containment. You can open these chests by using Opulent keys which can be found inside the Derelict Leviathan. If you have enough Opulent keys, then you can unlock Opulent chests in the following locations:

Pleasure Gardens

  • The first chest is sitting just beneath a golden statue
  • Another chest can be found under a war beast statue, just on the left side of the safe room where you group up during the mission
  • A third one can be found behind some ruins that are guarded by a Nightmare Chieftain

Royal Pools

  • The first chest in the area is found beneath the giant statue just outside of the center chamber
  • Another chest can be found in the left wall past the group of columns
