You will start Voidtrain with a very tiny train. The poor thing only has one platform, so it’s kind of a stretch to even call it a train!
It won’t always be like that, however, as you can greatly expand your train by using resources. Of course, you will need to start by expanding it with additional platforms.
In this guide, we’ll go over everything you need to expand your train!
How to Expand Your Train in Voidtrain
To be able to upgrade the train, you will need to create platforms. This can only be done at large Depots by using the Building Console. There are a few prerequisites you must meet, though!
First of all, you will need to research the Platform at your Research Table. This is a Phase 4 Research, so you will need to research everything in Phases 1 to 3 to unlock it.
The Platform Research will require the following materials:
Iron Bars x4: each Iron Bar is made by refining 2 pieces of Scrap Metal at a Smelter.
Bearing x2: made at a Workbench using 1 Iron Bar and 1 Grease each. Grease is obtained by refining Fat (from animals) and Chemicals (found floating around) at a Lab.
Bolts x2: made at a Workbench using 1 Iron Bar each.
Springs x2: made at a Workbench using 1 Iron Bar each.
Note that you will also need the exact same amount of these materials to actually build the Platform once you reach a Depot. Upgrading the train consumes quite a lot of resources!
Additionally, you should make sure to save materials for the Platform’s floors, which will require a total of 8 Wood to craft.
How to Build a Platform to Upgrade the Train
With the materials and Research out of the way, you just need to keep following the train’s tracks until you’re taken to a Depot.
Depots will have a Building Console ready for you to use now that you have researched platforms! They will also be much larger and have hostile guards, though, so be careful.
Clear out the guards and look for the Building Console. It’s a large terminal like the one in the picture above. Interact with it to open the train upgrade menu.
All you need to do is to left-click on the large plus sign at the bottom of the screen. If you have all of the materials, it will confirm the train expansion and add another platform at the back.
Lastly, approach the new platform on your train and use the Crafting Book tool. Select the Wooden Floor and place 4 floors so that they cover the entire platform.
Your train should now have a brand new platform for you to place down more constructions, machinery, and stations. Plus now you know how to use Building Consoles to expand the train anytime you need!
