Rengar, the Vastayan trophy hunter, is one of the hardest champions to master in League of Legends, so you’ll want to know what Runes to pick and how to build him right.
His melee-focused playstyle excels at hit-and-run strats, with some builds even turning him into a beast capable of one-shotting every enemy in his path.
In this guide, we’ll give you various viable builds and Rune sets that go well with Rengar in Season 14.
Rengar Builds for Season 14
Rune Setups
Most Versatile: Fleet Footwork Setup
This is the most versatile set of Runes for Rengar in Season 14, going all in on focusing on Fleet Footwork. It gives you great mobility and works well with any ability setup you wish to use!
This should be your bread and butter, at least when learning to play Rengar. Later on, you can use the other Rune sets here if you wish to focus on a certain playstyle.
Nonetheless, these are the runes to get for the Fleet Footwork setup:
Precision – Fleet Footwork, Triumph, Legend: Alacrity, and Coup de Grace.
Recommended Items (In Order) – Boots (Starter), Youmuu’s Ghostblade, Divine Sunderer, Zeal, Hullbreaker, Edge of Night.
Best For Top: Conqueror Setup
The Conqueror setup is a mid-high economy build that excels in the Top Lane. It’s harder to get going than the Fleet Footwork setup, but it’s the best choice for Top if you can get the ball rolling.
It’s still a solid choice in other lanes, especially at low ELO, since you have a lot of one-shot potential.
That said, it forces you into a somewhat predictable playstyle, which more skilled players will deal with easily.
Now, these are the Runes you want to get here:
Precision – Conqueror, Triumph, Legend: Alacrity, and Last Stand.
Recommended Items (In Order) – Boots (Starter), Youmuu’s Ghostblade, Divine Sunderer, Zeal, Hullbreaker, Edge of Night.
Good In Any Economy: Grasp of the Undying Setup
The Grasp of the Undying Rune setup is hard to use effectively, but mastering it will allow you to dominate any lane.
On top of that, it’s very flexible and works well with every item and ability setup. It’s equally powerful at every economy level, so you don’t need to worry too much about how much gold you have.
With that said, this is the setup you want to follow when choosing Runes:
Resolve – Grasp of the Undying, Demolish, Second Wind, and Revitalize.
Domination – Sudden Impact and Ingenious Hunter.
Shards – +8 Ability Haste, +9 Adaptive, +6 Armor.
Recommended Items (In Order) – Boots (Starter), Youmuu’s Ghostblade, Divine Sunderer, Zeal, Hullbreaker, Edge of Night.
Lethal High Economy Build: Hail of Blades Setup
If you want to one-shot nearly everything, the Hail of Blades Rune is your best bet. The one big downside is that this rune setup is only really useable at high economy.
You’ll need to be extremely efficient with your gold, and also rather lucky, to make this setup work!
Domination – Hail of Blades, Sudden Impact, Zombie Ward, and Relentless Hunter.
Inspiration – Magical Footwear and Future’s Market.
Recommended Items (In Order) – Axiom Arc, Essence Reaver, Immortal Shieldbow, and Lord Dominik’s Regards. Then pick either Mortal Reminder for mobility or Infinity Edge for damage.
You can also get Edge of Night or Guardian Angel as your last item if you sell Boots.
Ability Setups
Now, let’s go into which abilities to pick at each level. We have three different setups here, each one fulfilling a different role.
The main thing to know is how to read these setups: the numbers next to each ability are the levels at which you will level up the ability.
For example, “Thrill of the Hunt – 6, 11, 16” means you will pick Thrill of the Hunt at levels 6, 11, and 16.
With that cleared up, let’s dive into it!
Battle Roar Focus
This setup focuses on the Battle Roar ability to allow you to poke at enemies from range. It’s meant for you to play a hit-and-run playstyle, so it works best with the Fleet Footwork rune setup.
Savagery (Q) – 1, 8, 10, 12, 13.
Battle Roar (W) – 2, 4, 5, 7, 9.
Bola Strike (E) – 3, 14, 15, 17, 18.
Thrill of the Hunt – 6, 11, 16.
Savagery Focus
The Savagery setup is best for when you have an advantage in your lane, as you will get to boost your attacks even further to ensure that you get kills. It works pretty well with every Rune setup!
Savagery (Q) – 1, 4, 5, 7, 9.
Battle Roar (W) – 2, 8, 10, 12, 13.
Bola Strike (E) – 3, 14, 15, 17, 18.
Thrill of the Hunt – 6, 11, 16.
Assassin Setup
This ability setup is primarily aimed towards making your Rengar a one-shot beast. It’s particularly great when paired with the Hail of Blades and Conquerorrunesetups described above.
Savagery (Q) – 1, 4, 5, 7, 9.
Battle Roar (W) – 2, 14, 15, 17, 18.
Bola Strike (E) – 3, 8, 10, 12, 13.
Thrill of the Hunt – 6, 11, 16.
Recommended Spells
Last but not least, let’s take a look at the recommended spells to choose when playing Rengar.
You will want to always keep Flash on you, as it greatly enhances Rengar’s movement. Besides, extra mobility is always welcome in LoL!
As for your second spell, your best bet in the current meta is Teleport. You can use it to home in on targeted allied turrets, making it excellent for mobility.
Other options include Ignite or Smite to give you more ways to deal damage, but their utility is extremely lacking when compared to Teleport in Season 14.
As such, you’ll ideally always be running Flash + Teleport as Rengar!
