Way of the Hunter presents many of the most popular animal species among traditional hunters – including wolves, badgers, deer, and geese. Here’s where to locate them in-game, and a breakdown of all the different species you’ll encounter.
Coming across ‘Needzones’ is one way to find and track animals based on their appearance or location on the map. When you encounter various spots while traveling that appear to be trails or some sort of animal marking, you can “analyze” them (via prompt) to document their location.
After you analyze these ‘needzones,’ the corresponding animal(s) will appear on your map. You can then select (while having the pointer on the animal) to reveal their nearby resting zone. You can also place an exploration marker on this same resting zone.
For those new to the game, or looking to pick up some animal locations in Nez Perce Valley without venturing all about –we’ve outlined the animals you can hunt in Way of the Hunter below, as well as their corresponding locations.
Where to Find All Animals in Way of the Hunter – A Hunting Guide
Many of the animals you’ll be hunting in Way of the Hunter can be located fairly easily via River Knox, but it might not be obvious to newer players – below we’ve outlined where to find all animals in Way of the Hunter, as a hunting guide of sorts for the uninitiated.
You’ll encounter larger game like bears, and sheep – along with deer, foxes, and wolves. Conversely, many of the smaller birds like ducks and pheasants, while easier to hunt – happen to be much more difficult to spot due to their size.
Ducks
Ducks can be especially tricky to locate – they most often stay hidden or pop out of sight the moment they spot you approaching. There isn’t a precise or unique spot for ducks (much like any other animal in the game) but there are definitely locations that are bound to be more successful than others. In this case, that’s near River Knox, where you’ll head on down the river bank – you should spot quite a few ducks swimming around in the water. Even if they flee after you target one, you should still be able to track them within that specific area.
Black Bears
Black Bears are an incredibly intimidating animal to hunt, and out of all the animals and locales in the USA, the American Black Bear is probably the most notorious animal in Way of the Hunter. Much like many of the other animals, you can locate the black bear near the River Knox.
Head North from the Bear Den Ranch to easily locate the River Knox if you haven’t already. From that point, head West and look out for the black bear. Ideally, you’ll want to be travelling via vehicle to avoid any direct contact with the bear attacking you. They often venture along the edge of the river.
Badgers
Badgers are fairly simple when it comes to detection, as they like more open areas with more sparce vegetation and sloping plateaus. They can be found along the more open spaces and regions of Nez Perce Valley.
Deer – Mule, Whitetail
Deer – particularly Whitetail, are a primary choice for the starting hunter as they can garner good rewards and are fairly easy to practice on. They’re located throughout Nez Perce Valley – fast travel to the nearby campground will make for easy access to them.
Mountain Goats
Mountain Goats can also be conveniently located in the River Knox area. The mountain goats will venture down to drink water along the riverside. Fast traveling to the nearby campsite will provide you with the most practical position to take down mountain goats.
They tend to drink from the river around 9:40 AM, which is the best time to hunt them. Approaching the campsite location, you should move through the grassy region covered by trees and cross up the hill.
Pheasants
For hunting Pheasants, you’ll want to make your way to the River Knox location depicted below. The area is quite grassy, so spotting them given their size can be a bit difficult of a maneuver.
You’ll want to approach the areas slowly and aim from a distance of a hundred meters. The typical feeding time for these birds is around 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM.
Elks
Elk is required for a mission (Elk Stew Bourguignon) and aren’t that hard to locate in Way of the Hunter. Travel over to Yi’s Cabin, which is close to ‘She Devil’ mountains. Take a look at the surrounding area for elks, which may be travelling in a herd near the river banks.
Bighorn Sheep
Bighorn Sheep can be a little more mysterious, but are also required for a mission. The primary location you’ll find them in is situated several hundred meters away from a camping site in River Knox.
You can look around this region in the wooded area – the bighorn sleep is fairly rare in comparison to other prey in the game, and as such it may take some time to locate one.
