The Master Sword returns in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which is no surprise. The poor sword has been through a lot, though, and Link will need to recover it once again.

Link has the Master Sword from the start of the game, but it gets broken during the short prologue. You will need to complete some steps to restore it.

In this guide, we’ll tell you everything you need to know to get Link’s signature weapon once again! Do be warned that there will be some spoilers, however.

The Master Sword can be obtained at any moment if you know where it is and meet some prerequisites.

First off, complete the main story quests until you get the Paraglider. The Master Sword will also not be in your possession at that point.

Additionally, you should have two full Stamina wheel gauges. Trying to grab it will consume Stamina, contrary to how it consumed Health in Breath of the Wild.

You will need to get five Stamina Vessels from Goddess Statues, which will cost a total of 20 Lights of Blessing. You can get Lights of Blessing by completing shrines.

Now all you need to do is to get on top of the Light Dragon, which flies all over Hyrule. It’s a white Divine Dragon with golden hair and light blue crystals on its back.

The Master Sword is stuck in the dragon’s head, so you will need to get on top of them to claim the sword.

The easiest way to get on top of this dragon is to wait for it to fly close to a Skyview Tower, then launch from the tower and glide onto its back.

You can do this from the Rabella Wetlands Skyview Tower in the southeastern corner of the map, for example.

The Light Dragon should fly close to this tower at around 5:20 PM each in-game day.

Alternatively, you can track the dragon on your map by cleansing Hyrule Forest. You will need to enter through the Minshi Grove Chasm.

Land on the dragon and reach the Master Sword on its head, then hold the A button to grab the sword. Make sure that you have enough Stamina before attempting this!

With that done, you should have obtained the Master Sword and it’s now ready to use.

How to Use the Master Sword

The sword functions somewhat similarly to how it did in Breath of the Wild.

Using it to hit things will consume its energy, which essentially acts as durability. It will need to recharge once its energy is drained, and it can take as long as 10 minutes.

The Master Sword doesn’t recharge until you fully drain it either, just like in the previous game.

You can also shoot waves from the sword when you’re at full health. Hold the R button and release it after fully charging to fire.

The new twist for this weapon, however, is that you can modify it by using the Forge ability. You will need to Forge various items into the Master Sword to modify it and increase its attack power.

Press L when you have the Forge ability selected and the Master Sword equipped. Look for any suitable material and select to forget it into the sword.

The sword’s form and attack will vary greatly depending on which materials you fuse it with, lending you lots of possibilities.

However, the materials will disappear once the sword’s energy runs out, so keep that in mind!

Overall, it works pretty similarly to how it did in the previous game. Its ability to fuse with materials is quite fantastic, though, so make sure to try out different materials to customize your Master Sword.
