Helldivers 2 doesn’t have the best optimization for PCs, with many issues plaguing the port and negatively affecting players’ experiences. One of the worst offenders by far is the performance of the game, especially on default settings. Even with a high-end PC, it’s hard to get good and stable performance.

While we all want higher FPS, we don’t want to just turn everything down to low after all. We’ve come up with a guide, where we’ll take you through the best settings to get good visuals and better performance!

Best Optimization Settings to Max FPS

To optimize the game further, we’ll be adjusting all the graphical settings. We will also be making use of the upscaling features present in the game to push graphical fidelity and performance further. There’s a chance your issues are related to matchmaking and not performance, in which case, you should confirm it first before applying the settings we are about to teach you.

Display Settings

The first setting we’re going to be adjusting is the “Render Scale” setting. This dictates what resolution your game will be rendered at. Setting it to Native will render it at your monitor’s resolution. To push performance a bit further though, we can set it to “Ultra Quality” instead. This will give you a decent jump in performance without costing too much visual fidelity.

Upscaling in Helldivers 2

If you have a particularly older PC, you can turn it down to Quality. Any lower and you’ll start to notice some serious blurriness which makes the game look substantially worse. Before resorting to this, make sure you go through the rest of this guide.

The next setting to consider is V-sync. In general, this should be turned off. It can reduce performance as well as add some additional input delay. However, if you’re experiencing screen tearing at any point during gameplay, toggle this setting “On”.

Graphics Settings

Most of the improvements we will see will be through the Graphics tab. Below is what we recommend each individual setting to be:

  • Motion Blur: Up to preference
  • Depth of Field: Off
  • Bloom: Up to preference
  • Sharpness: Keep at 0.75
  • Texture Quality: Choose setting according to VRAM
  • Object Detail Quality: High
  • Render Distance: High if you have a decent CPU
  • Shadow Quality: High
  • Particle Quality: Low
  • Reflection Quality: Low
  • Space Quality: Low
  • Ambient Occlusion: Off
  • Screen-Space Global Illumination: On
  • Vegetation and Rubble Density: Low
  • Terrain Quality: High
  • Volumetric Fog Quality: High
  • Volumetric Cloud Quality: Lowest
  • Lighting Quality: Low
  • Anti Aliasing: On

After using this guide, you should be seeing much better general performance. It is at the cost of some graphical fidelity, but in a game like this, performance is more important. Hopefully, if you had a lower-end PC, you’re capable of enjoying the game now!
