Sand dunes can be one of the most annoying types of terrain in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. What makes it annoying is the fact that you need to unlock a specific traversal skill in order to climb them. If you attempt to climb up a sloping sand dune, you’ll just end up sliding down to the bottom.

Nonetheless, you will still have to unlock all traversal skills anyway if you plan on accessing all areas of the game. And for climbing sand dunes, you will need a specific traversal skill which I’ll talk about in this guide.

How to Climb Sand Dunes in Xenoblade Chronicles 3

The traversal skill that you need to unlock in order to be able to climb sand dunes is the Scree Walking skill. In order to unlock it, you will need to start the hero quest, Going Beyond Power. You will be able to start this quest by heading over to Alfeto Valley. Once there, you have to have Teach join your party temporarily.

After that, head over to Upper Melnath’s Pass until you come across a very steep slope of sand dunes. Interact with the quest marker and a brief cutscene will play. Shortly after the cutscene, you will then receive the Scree Walking skill.

With the skill unlocked, all you have to do is climb up the sand dune as if you’re walking on normal terrain.
