With the release of Palia on the Nintendo Switch, a lot of new players are going to be picking it up for the first time.
This relaxing community-driven MMO has plenty of activities to keep players engaged for days. The sheer amount of options presented to players can be overwhelming.
Don’t worry. We’ll get you up to speed on a quick beginner’s guide on everything you should know upon starting Palia.
Beginner’s Guide for Nintendo Switch Players
That is where this beginner’s guide comes in. It aims to help you get into the groove of things by assisting you through the beginning of your journey. Here’s what you can expect to learn:
Completing all the necessary start quests
Finding the fastest ways to start earning money
Tips on leveling up faster
Simple management for all your tools
Character Creation
Unlike some other games, the character you create at the start of the game is the character you have to stick with for the rest of your playtime. The appearance of your character can not be edited later on, so make sure to take your time here and create a character you like!
While you can choose different clothing options as you progress, it can take a while to find additional clothing. Be sure to pick something you like as you’ll have it equipped for a little while.
Finishing the Starter Quests
You should focus on finishing the starter quests as soon as possible. They not only teach you the basics of the game but also help you unlock all the basic tools and recipes necessary for crafting.
All of your various skills will be leveled up as you go through these quests completing them one by one. You should meet the local villagers who assist you in your questing business and spend time mining, farming, and hunting with them.
Once you’re done with doing all these basic quests, you should understand the game a lot better and be able to enjoy the rest of it more. It can serve as a tutorial of sorts for brand-new players.
Earning Money
Like most other MMOs and well, real life, money is very important in the world of Palia. There’s many different ways to earn money in this game, the fastest of which are hunting and farming.
Hunting animals with your bow and arrow, relaxing while fishing in a local lake, or catching bugs are all good methods to get money.
These activities reward you with items that you can sell for a pretty penny. Hunting animals like the Sernuk can help you get a ton of money early in the game, as you don’t need anything more than your starting gear to hunt them.
However, fishing is a lot easier than hunting for deer. It can be a way to relax when you are tired from all the hunting.
Make sure to catch the star-quality fish, as they sell for higher rates. Any materials gathered from hunting and fishing you don’t sell can be used for food, which is just an added benefit.
Farming is the perfect passive way to make a ton of money over time as you can set up farms that don’t need much continuous effort to maintain.
All you have to do is gather your crops from them every once in a while and sell them for sweet gold. This is a great automated way to make money. You can even keep hunting and doing other activities while this automatic system earns you gold in the background.
Leveling Up Faster
Leveling up all of your skills is necessary for Palia, as some quests require you to be at a higher level to finish quests. In addition to this, the higher your level the better you will be able to perform as you progress through the game.
An important thing to keep in mind for leveling up while completing activities is the focus bar. Located in the top left corner of the game, it fills up as you eat food and depletes as you finish activities.
The reason it’s important is because the closer that is to being full, the more XP boost you get from your activities.
Having your focus be close to full gives you a substantial bonus of 30 percent. Filling your bar up completely increases that bonus.
As you finish skill tasks, your focus bar will start to deplete. It’s very easy to fill it up again though, as all it takes is eating any food item you have in your inventory.
This is the simplest way to make the time you spend completing skill tasks more efficient.
Checking Your Tools Durability
As you progress through your Palia playthrough, you’ll notice you can upgrade all the tools you use while playing.
This is how you improve their effectiveness and make them more efficient. However, you will also notice that after upgrading past the initial “Makeshift” version of all your tools, they will start to lose durability upon use.
You can check the durability of all your tools by checking the yellow outline shown in the image below.
Alternatively, you can also check for tool durability by bringing up the character menu.
This is an issue, as they can degrade to their worse versions if they lose durability completely. Then, they have to be upgraded all over again which can waste both time and resources. You will have to take care of all of your tools and repair them before they degrade.
To repair tools you have to purchase a recipe for a Repair Station from Hodari. This requires you to be at least Level 4 in Mining. That’s not all. You also need repair kits which cost some materials to be crafted.
You need 5 Sapwood Planks and 1 Copper Bar to make the basic version of repair kits. As you get higher-level tools, you will require higher-quality versions of the crafting tools too.
5 Heartwood Planks and 1 Iron bar will be required for the second version of the repair kits.
1 Flow-Infused Plank and 1 Palium Bar will be required for the third and highest version of the repair kits.
Always make sure you have these materials with you, as they come in handy a lot more than you might think.
That is it for our beginner’s guide for all of the new Nintendo Switch fans playing the game for the first time. You should now be able to handle all the challenges of the game with much more confidence.
