Layered Armors are unique cosmetic armor sets in Monster Hunter: World, mostly earned through events and the Iceborne DLC post-game.
These Layered Armor sets can be worn as purely cosmetic armor, allowing you to customize your looks without rescinding the boons granted by your actual armor.
In this guide, we’ll tell you how to unlock the ability to craft and use Layered Armor.
How to Unlock Layered Armor
The option to forge Layered Armor is unlocked at the smithy whenever you get the materials required for any of the many Layered Armor sets in the game.
You can then use the smithy and, with the right materials in your possession, craft the Layered Armor you want.
Once crafted, you can equip your Layered Armor by selecting “Layered Armor: Settings” while using an Item Box.
But, let’s get back to how to unlock these cosmetic armor sets!
Most commonly, you will get various Tickets as materials for Layered Armor via various Event Quests. For most players, this will be how they unlock the ability to forge Layered Armor sets in general.
However, these Event Quests are time-limited. They range from recurring seasonal events to crossover events with other franchises, such as The Witcher or Street Fighter.
The most common Event Quests that unlock Layered Armor sets are the ones that task you with defeating Tempered or Arch-Tempered variants of large monsters.
Tempered and Arch-Tempered monsters are stronger and more aggressive than their regular variants. They also have a distinct metallic sheen on their body, and they’re primarily available via Event Quests.
Additionally, some Layered Armors can also be purchased as DLC. For example, the Samurai Layered Armor Set which you can only get by purchasing the Deluxe Kit.
However, by far the most important way to unlock Layered Armor sets is to simply beat the main Story Quests of the game.
Beating the Game & Post-Game Content
Beating the base Monster Hunter: World story will unlock most of the basic armor types for crafting as Layered Armors.
Some of them might also require you to turn in materials for Delivery Requests at the Resource Center, however. Make sure to check the Resource Center after you complete the story.
After that, playing through the Iceborne DLC campaign will unlock even more Layered Armors for you to craft!
Completing the Iceborne main story quests will also unlock the Guiding Lands post-game content, as well.
Conveniently, the Guiding Lands will be your primary source of Layered Armor outside of Event Quests.
Exploring the Guiding Lands will yield various rare resources that unlock even more Layered Armor sets!
What’s more, researching and defeating large monsters in the Guiding Lands will raise the Region Level.
The main benefit of higher Region Levels is that the rare Tempered monsters will start to appear naturally, without requiring Event Quests.
Keep in mind that the Guiding Lands are exclusive to the Iceborne DLC expansion.
This means that, technically speaking, unlocking most of the Layered Armor is part of the DLC and not the base game.
Nonetheless, now you know that your main way to unlock Layered Armors is through Event Quests and the post-game Guiding Lands content!
We won’t sugarcoat it, unlocking all the Layered Armor sets will be a time-consuming endgame grind, but it gives you something to work towards if you just want to keep playing Monster Hunter: World!
Keep an eye out for special time-limited Event Quests every now and then, especially during various worldwide holidays.
Then, keep hunting in and exploring the Guiding Lands to raise your Region Levels to make Tempered Monsters appear much more frequently.
