The Robe of the Dark Arts is the best mage armor available in Gothic 1 Remake and it is sitting inside Xardas’ Sunken Tower, his old residence before he moved to his current tower in the Orc lands.

The tower itself is partially submerged in the southern part of the Valley of Mines and getting inside requires diving underwater to find the entrance. In this guide I will show you exactly where to find the Robe of the Dark Arts so you can get your hands on the best mage armor in the game.

How to Get the Robe Of The Dark Arts

If you are not sure where Xardas’ Sunken Tower is located, I have marked its exact position on the map below. It sits in the southern part of the Valley of Mines and is easy to miss if you are not actively looking for it, since most of the tower is submerged underwater with only the top of the spire visible above the surface.

Entering the Sunken Tower

To actually get inside the Sunken Tower you need to dive into the water surrounding it and swim down to the bottom. It can feel a little disorienting at first since the entrance is not immediately obvious from the surface.

Keep swimming downward and you will eventually come across some stairs submerged at the bottom. Swim up through those stairs and they will lead you into the interior of the tower where you can surface and continue on foot.

Here’s a clip showing how to find the underwater entrance to the Sunken Tower.

Elemental Door

After entering the Sunken Tower, take some time to explore the interior, as there are chests scattered around worth looting before you push forward. You will also encounter Skeletons along the way, so make sure you have your weapons or spells ready before rounding any corners.

Keep moving through the tower and you will eventually reach a large locked door covered in symbols. The game gives you absolutely no hint about what to do here, which is exactly why so many players end up stuck staring at it.

If you look closely at the symbols on the door, you will notice they each represent a different element. To unlock it, you need to hit the door with a Fire Spell, a Wind Spell and an Ice Spell in any order.

Each element corresponds to one of the symbols on the door, and hitting all three with the correct spell type is what triggers the mechanism and causes the door to open. Make sure you have all three spell types available before attempting this, since you cannot proceed without them.

Here’s a clip showing how to open up the Elemental Door by using a Fire, Ice and a Wind spell.

Getting the Armor

Once you get through the elemental door, you will find yourself inside a library. There is a locked door in the library that can be opened by placing two stones into two altars. Behind it sits a chest containing some powerful spells, so it is worth going after if you have the time.

Stone I can be found by climbing the stairs in the upper, non-submerged section of the Sunken Tower, inside a chest. Stone II is located behind a locked gate in the library itself, which you need to lockpick before accessing the chest behind it.

However, if the Robe of the Dark Arts is all you are here for, you do not need to do any of that. Simply head straight as you enter the library and you will walk into a room where the Robe of the Dark Arts sits behind a purple barrier.

As you approach it, a Demon Lord will be summoned, and you will need to defeat it before the barrier comes down. Once it is dealt with, the barrier disappears and you can walk up and pick up the robe. If any part of this feels confusing, the video below should clear things up.

Here’s a short clip showing the fight with the Demon Lord and how to get the armor.

That’s It

That is the” Robe of the Dark Arts” taken care of. It is one of those items that the game hides well enough that a lot of players finish their first playthrough without ever finding it. If you are running a mage build, getting this robe equipped changes how durable you feel in the later chapters considerably.

The Demon Lord guarding it is the only real obstacle standing between you and the best mage armor in the Colony, and once that fight is done the robe is yours to keep.
