The eastern shipwreck in Gothic 1 Remake is one of the many landmark locations you can visit, and it is home to a bunch of chests that you can lockpick.
These chests are also some of the hardest ones to open up, too! One is underwater, for example, while another is 4/4 difficulty. Even better, that latter one is also behind a 4/4 difficulty door! It’s not easy out there…
In this guide, I’ll help you find and open all of these shipwreck chests!
Where to Find the Shipwrecks

First of all, the shipwrecks with locked chests can be found in the eastern part of the Valley of the Mines. They’re by the shore north of the Swamp Camp, on the spot marked above.
Now, before you go there, I do recommend preparing properly for opening the chests!

The first thing I recommend is training your ability to breathe underwater. You can do that by talking to Homer. He’s on the bridge marked on the map above, on the western part of the Valley of the Mines.
The main reason for this is that one of the chests is actually underwater! This chest is also required for the “Joining the Mercenaries” quest. And yes, you’ll run out of breath while Lockpicking.

The second thing I recommend is training your Lockpicking skill. We go over this in more detail in our detailed Lockpicking guide. The gist of it, though, is that you need to talk to Fingers at the Old Camp. He’s shown above.
I recommend at least getting Lockpicking to Trained. This will simplify the puzzles by removing 1 connection between plates, and I’d even say it’s required for some of these locks. It really does help!
With that out of the way, let’s dive right in and start opening these chests up!
Source of Magic

The very first chest here is the one required for the “Joining the Mercenaries” quest. For this one, you just need to swim to the mast a bit off the shore. As part of the quest, it should also be near where Myxir is.

Once you swim to the mast, go underwater to find a shipwreck. The locked chest you need here is near the ship’s wheel, in the stern. It can be hard to see with how dark it is, but it should be next to some Siren’s Hair flowers.
Now, the solution for this lockpicking puzzle varies depending on your current Lockpicking skill level. First, here’s the solution if you have not leveled up Lockpicking at all:
- Plate 2 – Right
- Plate 3 – Left
- Plate 2 – Right
- Plate 3 – Left
- Plate 2 – Right
- Plate 3 – Left
- Plate 2 – Right
- Plate 4 – Right
- Plate 1 – Left
- Plate 2 – Right
- Plate 4 – Right
- Plate 1 – Left
- Plate 2 – Right
- Plate 4 – Right
- Plate 1 – Left
- Plate 4 – Right
- Plate 1 – Left
- Plate 4 – Right
- Plate 1 – Left
- Plate 4 – Right x3
Now, if you have leveled up Lockpicking at least once, the solution will be a bit different. Here’s the solution if you have Trained Lockpicking:
- Plate 4 – Right x5
- Plate 2 – Right x3
- Plate 1 – Left x2
With that, the puzzle is solved and the chest is open! Claim the loot within and you’re all done here. This will also allow you to continue the “Joining the Mercenaries” quest.
Note: the plates are numbered from bottom to top. That means that the closest plate is 1 and the furthest one is 4, for example.
Shipwreck Cabin Door

For the next lockpicking puzzle here, go to the big shipwreck that’s right on the shore. It’s the one shown in the screenshot above, for reference.

Go to the shipwreck’s stern and try to open the cabin door below the ship’s wheel. This will start the Lockpicking minigame.
Now, this puzzle is an extremely tricky one. The game itself states it has a 4/4 difficulty rating, and it sure isn’t lying! So, personally, I’d advise against trying this puzzle if you don’t have at least Trained Lockpicking.
With that said, here is the solution for it if you do already have Trained Lockpicking:
- Plate 2 – Right x2
- Plate 3 – Right x6
- Plate 4 – Right x2
- Plate 5 – Right x3
- Plate 3 – Right x5
- Plate 1 – Left x1
- Plate 2 – Right x6
- Plate 3 – Right x6
- Plate 4 – Right x3
When you finish the sequence, the door will unlock, allowing you to enter the captain’s cabin. You’ll find some good loot inside the cabin, but there’s yet another locked chest inside!
Captain’s Cabin Chest

So, now that you’re inside the shipwreck’s captain’s cabin, there’s one last locked chest for you to deal with. It’s to the far left side of the cabin as you go in, so it’s opposite of the door itself.
Since I recommended having Trained Lockpicking for the cabin door itself, the same rule applies here. It’s another 4/4 difficulty lock, after all! As such, here’s the solution for the cabin’s chest using Trained Lockpicking:
- Plate 6 – Left x6
- Plate 2 – Right x6
- Plate 1 – Right x1
- Plate 3 – Right x6
- Plate 4 – Right x1
- Plate 5 – Left x2
- Plate 6 – Left x4
- Plate 2 – Right x5
- Plate 1 – Right x3
Finish the sequence to open the chest and claim the loot within. Most notably, you get the Armor Amulet here, which grants +15 defense to both Edge and Blunt. Not too shabby, right?
So, there you have it! That’s the locations and solutions to all of the chests you can lockpick at the eastern shipwreck in Gothic 1 Remake. I hope this helped deal with these tough Lockpicking puzzles.
