You can choose to be a vassal of an overlord in Stellaris, but in some cases, you’ll be thrown into a situation where you’re forced on your own accord. Luckily, there’s a way to break free.
In Stellaris, you can choose to recruit vassals who will serve as your underlings. Basically, they will go to war with you, though they won’t be able to claim more territory for themselves. On the other hand, you can choose to be a vassal yourself and serve an empire of superior strength.
In some cases, however, a stronger empire will demand you to be their vassal, and in the event that you refuse, you’ll be met with dire consequences. If you choose to remain as a vassal, then you have no choice but to serve as their underling.
Luckily, there’s a way to break free from your Overlord, and that’s what we’ll take about in this article.
How to Break Free from Overlord in Stellaris
If you have become a vassal of an Overlord in Stellaris, the game actually gives you the option to break free from that overlord. This comes in the form of the Request Independence option.
To do this, head over to your overlord’s empire, then choose the Request Independence option in the Diplomacy section. However, the problem is that in order for your request to be granted, you’ll need to have high Acceptance. Since the game gives you a base of -50, getting that request granted won’t be possible.
There are ways to work around this, however. One, you can declare war in the event your request is declined. However, only do this if you think you’re powerful enough to win it. The other is to ally with an empire that dislikes your Overlord. This way, they can guarantee your independence and will even help you win the war.
