As an Overlord, you’ll have control of your subjects who have their own degrees of autonomy. These subjects will be under your command and some will even pay you tributes depending on what type of subject they are.
As you can see, there are a handful of perks you can enjoy by being an Overlord. However, you will need to earn that title first. This guide will show you how.
How to Become Overlord in Stellaris

Becoming an Overlord is actually quite simple. To start, you’ll need to subjugate a target empire. Then, you’ll need to choose the terms under the Propose Subjugation window. Then, as soon as you decided on the terms, you can then choose to start the war for subjugation.
Which Subjects Can You Subjugate?
There are a total of 9 regular subjects as well as 3 specialized subjects you can subjugate in the game. Each of them has its own perks to offer.
As of the Overlord expansion, a lot of tweaks have been introduced regarding the vassalization mechanics, thus giving you a lot more options when subjugating an empire.
The types of regular subjects you can subjugate are as follows:
- Vassal
- Protectorate
- Tributary
- Subsidiary
- Dominion
- Satellite
- Signatory
- Thrall
- Satrapy
- Scion
Meanwhile, the three specialized subjects are the Bulwark, Prospectorium, and Scholarium.
