The Psyker is a powerful origin that emphasizes psychic powers and willpower. These pair well with the officer and vanguard for their defensive and tank-support capabilities!

There’s no doubt that Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader has a pretty expansive character creator and levelling up system.

For the most optimised gameplay, you’ll want to make sure you’re complimenting your stats and abilities with your build. This guide will show you how!

The Unfair Sanctic Build – Officer Vanguard Psyker Guide

Officer Vanguard Psyker gameplay in Rogue Trader

This guide will break down a Psyker build which uses the Officer and Vanguard archetypes. We’ll be looking first at the character creation, next the levelling up routes and finally the best gear.

These build guides work best as blueprints for creating a powerful character, but gameplay is subjective. Feel free to fine-tune for your specific preferences!

Character Creation

Characteristics to specialise for the build.

This build is all about creating a foundation that soaks up damage and acts as a tank. To this end, you’ll favourite: Willpower, Weapons Skill, Strength and Toughness. Focusing on these work best in tandem with the Officer-Vanguard Psyker build.

Once you’ve adjusted your appearance, you’ll want to make the following selections in character creation:

  • Homeworld – Imperial World (grants +10 to strength)
  • Origin – Sanctioned Psyker (Sanctic)
  • Triumph – Feat of greatness
  • Talent – Shadow of Torment
  • Archetype – Officer
Homeworld for the Officer Vanguard Psyker build.

Evenly distribute your characteristics between Willpower, Weapons Skill, Strength and Toughness before moving onto the game.

Willpower is very important since as a Psyker it will improve you Psychic abilities. The others support you as a tank.

Levelling Up – Officer Archetype

As you progress through the game, you’ll be able to level up your first archetype, where you should’ve selected Officer.

These work as great leaders and are efficient for handling diplomatic situations.

You’ll automatically start with the Voice of Command talent to help combat enemies. Then, you’ll want to select the following options as you level up and progress:

  • Coercion
  • Bring it Down
  • Finest Hour!
  • Seize the initiative
  • Fellowship (+ Characteristic)
  • Better to die for the Emperor
  • Commanding Voice
  • Fellowship (+ Characteristic)
  • Purge Soul
  • Psy Rating 1
  • Focus!
  • Coercion
  • Finest Hour (Upgrade lvl.1)
  • Commerce
  • Toughness(+ Characteristic)
  • Destined Talent
  • Weapon Skill (+ Characteristic)
  • Air of Authority
  • Duelling Mastery
  • Inspiring Speech
  • Commerce
  • Toughness (+ Characteristic)
  • It Will Not Die
  • Finest Hour (Upgrade IV)

This is everything you’ll need to master your Officer archetype.

These choices bring out the more support natured side of the officer, but still allow for great leadership and diplomacy through Coercion selections.

Levelling up – Vanguard Archetype

Levelling up the Vanguard archetype .

Now, it’s time to level up your second archetype, which will unlock after filling every slot for the Officer.

Here, you’ll want to select the Vanguard advanced archetype, great for soaking up damage and protecting your allies.

You will automatically start with the unyielding beacon ability, a great defensive talent! You’ll notice that many of these skills add to the Tankiness of your build.

For this optimised build, you’ll want to level up this archetype by taking the following route:

  • Shield of the Emperor
  • Combat Master
  • Resilient Beacon
  • Unyielding Guard
  • Ap Increase
  • Strength (+ Characteristic)
  • Toughness (+ Characteristic)
  • Renitent Beacon
  • Follow My Lead
  • Coercion
  • Offensive Follow
  • Psy Rating 2
  • Toughness (+ Characteristic)
  • Grenadier
Heavy armour proficiency for the tank role.
  • Taunting Defence
  • Coercion
  • Fellowship
  • Unyielding Guard (Upgrade IV)
  • Enduring Shield
  • Commerce
  • Strength (+ Characteristic)
  • Hammer of the Emperor.
  • Heavy armour Proficiency.
  • Weapon Skill (+ Characteristic)
  • Commerce
  • Beacon of Might
  • Psy Rating 3
  • Unyielding Guard (Upgrade I)

This is everything you need for upgrading your second archetype.

If you’ve gone this route, you’ll be able to swap medium armour for heavy armour and endure far more damage.

Levelling Up – Exemplar

The third archetype will now be unlocked after full completion of the VanguardThis is a support archetype that will allow you additional talents and abilities from the previous two archetypes.

The most important ability to take here is the Perfection Under Fire talent. This will grant +5 to all your characteristics, doubling when you have 25% health.

Following this you’ll want to focus on Coercion, Strength, Toughness, Willpower and Weapon Skill. These all lean into the defensive-support role of this build.

It’s also worth selecting the Sword of Faith, Defensive Stance and any Psy Ratings on offer!

Otherwise, be flexible here and choose what fits naturally to your playstyle. Remember to solely focus on your defensive characteristics.

Optimising Gear

Whilst you’re levelling up your archetypes, it’s important to make sure you’re optimising your gear too.

Not all of these are available from the beginning- so, as you progress, you’ll want to focus on anything that leans into our established tank or defensive characteristics.

However, the following are our favorite picks for this particular build. Note that you’ll need heavy armour proficiency for the chest plate!

  • Helmet – Helm of Determination.
  • Armour – Arbitrator Solomon Vhyr’s Armour
  • Trinket (I) – Scarlet Signet of the Inquisition
  • Trinket (II) – Heart of the nameless
  • Amulet – Invigorating Resolve
  • Gloves – Exoskeletal Gloves
  • Cape – Malpian Shroud
  • Boots – Unyielding Vanguard Boots
  • Weapon – Watcher From Above
  • Pistol – Anti-Vehicle Revolver
  • (Alt Weapon) – Staff of Shock and Awe
Gear and stats for the build

This gear puts the gameplay emphasis on a support role, elevating your defence and ability to soak up that damage!

Now then, that’s it for the build. If you’ve followed along with the steps, you should find a pretty powerful character that works great with a defensive playstyle. As mentioned, this is just a blueprint. Feel free to experiment and see what works for you.
