Ulfar is one of the many companions you can recruit in Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, and a Space Marine at that! He naturally excels at using burst weapons.

Not just any Space Marine, either, Ulfar is a Space Wolf! His imposing stature commands respect and his combat abilities are second to none, so he’s a fantastic ally to have.

In this guide, we’ll tell you how to build Ulfar to truly capitalize on his natural affinity for burst-firing weapons.

Ulfar Burst Space Marine Build

Ulfar the Space Marine is, frankly put, an absolute beast. His huge hulking frame makes him an ideal user of Power Armor and burst-fire weapons like the Heavy Bolter.

Considering that Ulfar joins quite late into the game, he already has his entire Soldier Archetype chosen for you. He’s at Level 20 when he joins, and he’ll level up to match your Rogue Trader to boot.

Ulfar's Archetypes

He also has already specced into the Arch-Militant archetype, although you do get a lot of customization for his abilities and talents as an Arch-Militant.

Nonetheless, both of these Archetypes are focused on the use of ranged weapons. It’s very limiting in a way, but it’s also perfect for making him into a character that focuses on burst-firing!

Ulfar in Combat

Ulfar’s damage potential is also naturally high, which is another great thing to have when using burst weapons. Simply put, more shots with higher damage can quickly decimate your foes.

So, if you want to truly turn Ulfar into a Space Marine, we’ll now go over which abilities and talents you should get to make him excel with burst-fire weapons.

Levels 21 to 35: Arch-Militant

As we previously stated, his entire Officer archetype tree is set in stone. He also has already chosen his talents for the first couple of Arch-Militant levels, so we can start to customize him at Level 21.

Now, here are the recommended abilities and talents for this build:

  • Level 21 – “Always Ready” talent and Ballistic Skill attribute increase.
  • Level 22 – “Reckless Rush” ability and “Heavy Weapon Proficiency” talent.
  • Level 23 – Demolition, Athletics, or Awareness skill increase. Pick whichever one your party is lacking. Also, get the “Heavy Gunner” talent.
  • Level 24 – Agility attribute increase and “Overpower” talent.
  • Level 25 – “Discipline” talent.
  • Level 26 – Increase whichever skill you want based on what you chose at Level 23, then get the Agility attribute increase.
Arch-Militant part 2
  • Level 27 – “Steady Superiority Upgrade IV”.
  • Level 28 – Increase whichever skill you want and get the “All Out” talent.
  • Level 29 – Perception attribute increase and “Breaking Point” talent.
  • Level 30 – “Wildfire” ability.
  • Level 31 – “Critical Versatility” talent.
  • Level 32 – Perception attribute increase and increase any skill you want.
  • Level 33 – “Flashfire” talent and Perception attribute increase.
  • Level 34 – Toughness attribute increase and “Solid Projectile Weapon Expert” talent.
  • Level 35 – “Steady Superiority Upgrade III”.

Level 36 to 45: Exemplar & Beyond

Warhammer 40K Rogue Trader: Ulfar Burst Space Marine Build - Exemplar

Considering that Ulfar’s Soldier level-up choices aren’t exactly optimal, we will mostly use the Exemplar archetype to pick up some Soldier abilities and talents.

Additionally, we’ll get to finish off the build by picking some Exemplar-exclusive talents that can boast Ulfar’s capabilities.

  • Level 36 – “Extermination” and “Fired Up” talents.
  • Level 37 – Increase any skill you want and get the “Broad Expertise” talent.
  • Level 38 – Ballistic Skill attribute increase and “Characteristic Training: Ballistic Skill” talent.
  • Level 39 – “Concentrated Fire” ability and any skill increase you want.
  • Level 40 – “Deadly Aim” and “Accustomed to Glory” talents.
Exemplar part 2
  • Level 41 – Ballistic Skill attribute increase and “Muzzle Velocity” talent.
  • Level 42 – “Devastating Attack” ability and Ballistic Skill attribute increase.
  • Level 43 – “Exploit Weakness” talent and any other common talent you want. “Characteristic Training” talents for Agility or Perception are solid choices here.
  • Level 44 – Increase any skill you want and then get the “Deadly Aim” talent.
  • Level 45 – “AP Increase” improvement.

Now, your Ulfar is more than ready to take up the mantle of a true Space Marine. Give him a Heavy Bolter and set him free to devastate anyone who dares stand in his path!
