One of the more complicated aspects of Last Train Home is managing your soldiers. There are multiple things to know about getting the best performance from your troops and figuring everything out in-game can be confusing.

Complete Soldier Guide | Roles, Level, Experience, Attributes & Traits

From getting experience to assigning roles, traits, and attributes, there’s a chock-full of things that Last Train Home needs you to understand. Your soldiers, after all, are the heart of your locomotive.

They keep your train running by keeping its heart beating, and they run through the cars like life-blood on the tracks. So keeping them in top shape will make your gameplay all the more immersive.

Roles

Head to Soldier Overview and open the Roles tab. In general, there are two main classifications of roles in Last Train Home. There are the roles inside the train and outside the train.

Soldiers can have different roles based on their attributes. In total, a soldier can have a maximum of 4 roles, either Inside or Outside the train.

Inside Roles

  • Worker
    • Workers have a versatile role inside the train. They stoke the locomotive and keep the train running, run maintenance, and apply improvements to the train.
    • Given their general role, any soldier with basic Fitness can be a Worker.
  • Engineer
    • Engineers conduct technical tasks on board. This includes driving the locomotive, crafting new equipment, and researching new technologies.
    • A soldier must have good Willpower and Intelligence to become an Engineer.
  • Cook
    • A Cook’s role is to handle food in the train cars. They prepare meals in the Kitchen Car and make sure everyone is fed. They also work on crafting new recipes for the troops.
    • A soldier needs above average Dexterity and Charisma to become a Cook.
  • Doctor
    • Doctors provide medical treatment for recovering patients in the Hospital Car and can research and craft medical supplies when needed.
    • Only soldiers with high Intelligence can become Doctors.

Outside Roles

  • Rifleman
    • The Rifleman serves as the mainstay of any infantry squad. Strong in number, Riflemen are jacks of all trades in combat and can make use of any weapon; from ranged fire to hand-to-hand combat with bayonets.
    • Given this, a regular Rifleman only needs to be at a basic level of Fitness.
  • Machine Gunner
    • A Machine Gunner operates heavy-duty machinery in the middle of battle. Wielding a machine gun means they’re a formidable threat in battle, especially when it comes to charging forward or delivering suppressive fire.
    • For this role, a Machine Gunner needs above-average Fitness and Dexterity.
  • Medic
    • Medics provide medical assistance on the battlefield. Having a Medic with your troops can greatly increase your chances of victory and your soldiers’ chances of returning from battle. The more experienced a medic is, the better they are at treating wounds.
    • A soldier must have above average Intelligence and Charisma to be a medic.
  • Grenadier
    • Grenadiers are adept with explosives and can deliver devastating blows over wide areas. They have no problem handling weapons like grenades, mines, and other explosives. They are also resilient to explosions on the field.
    • Grenadiers require above average Fitness and Intelligence.
  • Scout
    • Scouts carry out reconnaissance on the battlefield to protect your troops from surprise attacks. They are also skilled with sniper rifles and can cover your troops with sustained fire from the back line.
    • Scouts need above average Dexterity and Willpower to be effective.

The soldiers inside the train will get experience by fulfilling their tasks, while outside-role soldiers gain experience by completing Points of Interest.

The total experience of a Point of Interest will be divided by the number of soldiers in the squad you send. Outside-role soldiers also get experience by finishing battles.

Giving medals to certain soldiers will also grant them extra experience. In total, this will give them 3000 EXP per medal.

NOTE: Experience will not increase per enemy killed and will only depend on whether you’ve accomplished mission objectives.

Rank and Attributes

A soldier with multiple roles will gain experience according to the tasks they accomplish within those roles.

This means that a soldier can simultaneously be a Level 1 Grenadier and Level 3 Rifleman. All of these experiences are cumulative and contribute to your soldier’s rank increase

As your soldier increases rank, they get yellow or blue points as the rank increases in status. The yellow points are Attributes. Every time you get a yellow point, you can increase one of the five attributes: Fitness, Dexterity, Intelligence, Willpower, and Charisma.

Blue points are Role points. When you get a blue point, you can head to the Role Progression page and improve your soldier’s performance specific to a role he is assigned.

Each level-up will require a certain attribute requirement. Below you can see that to level up Rostislav’s Cook role, he needs 5 Dexterity and 5 Charisma.

Last Train Home Roles Progression

Deciding which new role you can assign your soldier is largely dependent on their attributes. Try and strategize which soldiers are best for a specific role.

Keep in mind that some roles will be easier to achieve than others. Sometimes it won’t be worth leveling up roles for specific soldiers because it will be a waste.

You can view what attributes are good for a certain role by opening your Soldier Overview and clicking on the soldier you want to upgrade.

Hover over the attributes and the game will help you by describing what each attribute affects. From there, you can make your own decisions on what’s worth investing in.

In general, you can leave your soldiers to their own devices, and they will level up by just doing their tasks on the train.

This takes time, though, and won’t help if you’re trying to level up your soldiers in all aspects. Sending them into battle and Places of Interest ensures your men will be well-rounded and interchangeable for roles.

Traits

Each soldier will possess different traits making them better suited for specific roles. Traits will determine a soldier’s personality and physical features. Traits aren’t set in stone, however, and new traits can be acquired as you journey to Vladivostok.

These are important when going to Points of Interest. Some Points of Interest will require soldiers with specific traits.

And that sums up all you need to know about the soldiers in Last Train Home. Level them up, mix and match their roles, and make sure they all make it home.
