The best one handed sword in the game is named after the guy carrying it. At least it is easy to remember.

Scar’s Sword is the best one handed weapon in Gothic 1 Remake and it comes from exactly who you would expect. Scar is one of Gomez’s personal bodyguards stationed in the Castle of the Old Camp and he carries the sword on him at all times. The only way to get it is to take him down.

The good news is that Scar can be isolated and fought separately from Gomez if you approach it correctly, which makes the whole thing a lot more manageable than fighting through the entire throne room. In this guide, I will show you exactly how to get it done.

Getting Scar’s Sword Early On

Before you can go after Scar, you need to progress far enough in the story to gain access to the inner parts of the castle in the Old Camp.

Once you are in, you will find Scar roaming around the throne room. But taking him on while everyone else is around is not ideal though. The room is too busy and you risk pulling in more NPCs than you can handle.

The cleanest approach is to head to your house and sleep until midnight. Make your way back to the castle and wander around for a bit. The throne room will start clearing out as NPCs head off for the night.

Keep an eye on Scar and wait for him to start making his way out. The moment he begins to leave, talk to him. This stops him in place and keeps him separated from anyone still lingering nearby.

With Scar isolated, go aggressive. Spam your attacks and dodge when he swings back. He is tough but manageable one on one. Make sure you save before engaging him just in case things go wrong. Take him down and loot Scar’s Sword off his body.

Here’s a short clip which shows how to get Scar’s Sword by defeating Scar.

Wrapping Up

Worth noting before you go after it is that Scar’s Sword requires 70 Strength to wield effectively. You may not have that yet at this point in the game but it is worth keeping in mind as a target to work towards so you can start taking full advantage of it as soon as possible.

It is one of those weapons that makes a noticeable difference the moment the requirement is met and getting it early means it will be waiting in your inventory ready to go. It also pairs well with the other powerful gear available in the same area of the castle.

If you want to push even further and grab the best two handed sword and the best armor in the game while you are at it, check out my Ancient Ore Armor guide which covers how to get both in the same run.
