The Ancient Ore Armor is the best armor in Gothic 1 Remake. It is made of highly durable steel chainmail built to withstand heavy attacks, with high resistance against weapons, fire, and magic. Normally it is a late game piece of gear but there is a way to get your hands on it much earlier than the game intends, as early as Chapter 1 if you are willing to take on a tough fight.

The armor is located in Gomez’s castle within the Old Camp and getting it early means taking on Gomez and his guards before you are supposed to. It is not easy but the payoff is significant. In this guide, I will walk you through exactly how to get it so you can walk around the colony in the best armor in the game well ahead of schedule.

Getting the Ancient Ore Armor Early On

Before you can go after the Ancient Ore Armor, you need to progress far enough in the story to gain access to the inner parts of the castle in the Old Camp. The armor itself is locked inside a chest in Gomez’s room and the key to that chest is on Gomez himself, which means you are going to have to take him down to get it.

Alternative Method

But if you are not comfortable fighting him, you can also try to pickpocket him instead. You only need to level up the Pickpocket skill once to do this. Before attempting it, make a save just in case it goes wrong.

There are two ways to go about it. The first is pickpocketing him while he is walking around. The second is the throne method, which involves squatting in front of him while he is seated. He will stand up when you do this and as he turns to sit back down that is your window to attempt the pickpocket.

Taking Care Of Arto and Scar

If you would rather fight your way to the key instead, there are a few preparations worth making before you engage Gomez directly.

Start by heading up to the upper floor of the castle and taking out the single guard posted there. Getting rid of him beforehand removes one less variable from the fight later on.

Next you need to deal with Arto and Scar before touching Gomez. Taking them out separately not only makes the Gomez fight significantly more manageable but also rewards you with some very powerful loot in the process. Here is how to do it cleanly.

Head to your house and sleep until midnight. This clears out most of the people from the throne room as they head off for the night. Wander around for a little while until the remaining workers and NPCs start clearing out as well.

Once Arto and Scar begin to leave, talk to Arto to lock him in place while Scar walks away. With Scar gone and Arto isolated, start attacking him and take him down. Loot everything he drops before moving on.

After that head back to your house and sleep until midnight again. Return to the throne room and wait for everyone to clear out until Scar is isolated. Use the same approach and take him down. Scar drops Scar’s Sword, which is the best one handed sword in the game, so make sure you pick it up.

Fighting Gomez

Once both Arto and Scar are dealt with, head back to your house and sleep again. This time wake up a little earlier than midnight, around 11 PM.

The reason for this is that Gomez leaves at midnight and you want to catch him in the right spot. The throne room is too crowded and difficult to isolate him in, so wait for him to get up and start making his way to his room.

Once he stands and begins to leave, follow him and engage him on the stairs. It is a much more manageable fight in that spot compared to taking him on in the throne room surrounded by other NPCs.

Once you defeat Gomez, loot him immediately. He drops Innos’ Rage, which is the best two handed sword in the game, so make sure you pick that up. He will also drop two keys which unlock the chests inside his room.

This short clip shows how to take down Gomez when he is climbing the stairs.

Looting The Ancient Ore Armor

Once you have Gomez’s keys, head back to your place and sleep until daytime. The upper portion of the castle sits empty during the day which makes getting to his room a lot easier without having to worry about NPCs getting in the way.

Head upstairs and turn left and you will find Gomez’s room. You can get inside by lockpicking the door if you have the skill for it.

But the easier and cleaner method is to wait for an NPC called Velaya. She comes upstairs during the day and opens the door to Gomez’s room herself. Simply follow her in when she opens it and you are inside without spending a single lockpick.

Once you are in, find the two chests in the room and open them with the keys you looted from Gomez. One of the chests holds the Ancient Ore Armor. The other has additional loot worth grabbing as well. With the armor in hand, you now have the best gear in the game well ahead of when most players would ever see it.

That’s It

That covers everything you need to get the Ancient Ore Armor as early as Chapter 1. The whole process takes some patience but walking away with the best armor in the game alongside Scar’s Sword and Innos’ Rage makes it absolutely worth the effort if you do not want to progress the normal way.

Make sure you save at every stage of this attempt. Things can go sideways fast and losing progress on a multi-step process like this one is genuinely painful. A quick save takes seconds and will save you from having to redo large chunks of the attempt if something does not go the way you planned.
