21 articlesOne of the earliest quests in The Alters will require you to use a Mining Outpost to gather organic matter. This will give you a very useful resource, which the game just calls Organics. These can be used for a large variety of crafting recipes, including tools and base modules. In this quick guide, we’ll tell you all you need to know to get those Organics!
How to Gather Organic Matter Using the Outpost | The Alters
First things first, you should prepare to set out to whichever Organics Deposit you’re going to mine. Make sure to have built at least 1 Mining Outpost and some Pylon Components at your Workshop. How many Pylons you need will depend on how far your base is from the deposit, though. Just keep in mind they have a range of about 40 meters from the Outpost and other Pylons.
Once you’re ready, travel to the Organics Deposit you want to start mining. Use your Polygonal Scanner when you get there. It will help you pinpoint the center of the deposit, which shows up as red underground while scanning.
Just use the Build menu to place your Mining Outpost on top of the deposit’s center when you spot it. Then, also use the Build menu to place Pylons connecting the outpost and your own base together. This will allow the outpost to transfer the mined resources back to your base, essentially.

When everything’s in place and ready, you just need to walk up to the Mining Outpost itself. You’ll be able to interact with the terminal there, which will allow you to start mining the deposit for resources. In this case, it would be Organics, of course!
Time will pass while using the outpost, though. You get resources for every 1 in-game hour of work. Just in case, you can stop and resume without losing progress whenever you want.
Alternatively, you can assign certain Alters to your outposts to automate the process. You can do that from the Hub (Tab on PC, View on Xbox, Touchpad on PlayStation). Certain Alters are much more efficient than default Jan!
Nonetheless, that’s all you need to know to be able to gather organic matter with the outpost in The Alters. If you’re doing this for the “Organics Matter” quest, keep mining until you total 180 Organics and you’re all done.
