These annoying rocks block a path that’s crucial for investigating the area you find yourself in. Thankfully, Jan seems to have cooked up the recipe for a new tool. In this guide, we’ll help you quickly complete this objective.
How to Get Through the Rocks for “Find A Way Out” Quest | The Alters
If you’re here, we assume you already investigated the rocks as part of the quest and were told to get a Vertara Drill. At that point, just return to the Workshop in your base. You should now see the recipe for the Vertara Drill under the Gear category. It requires 50 Metals and 20 Organics. The base build time for it is 1 in-game hour.
Once you’ve built and collected the Vertara Drill, you’ll now also be able to craft Drill Charges at the Workshop. Those cost 20 Metals and take 1 in-game hour to build. Make sure to make at least 1 of these before you head out! 1 Drill Charge equals 1 Vertara Drill use.
When you’re done with all the crafting, return to the rocks blocking the path and bring up the Build menu. You’ll see the Vertara Drill as an option on the very top of the wheel, as shown above.

Then, just make sure to place the drill on the highlighted circle area. It’s the only place where you can put the drill down here. The game will let you know it’s the right spot by highlighting the Vertara Drill in blue. Just confirm it when you’re ready.
Lastly, interact with the Vertara Drill itself. Jan will use it to obliterate the rocks, unblocking the path and allowing you to proceed! Future blockages will work pretty much the same as this, more or less.
