Dwarf Fortress: How To Build A Well Guide

Dwarf Fortress introduced to us that dwarves are heavy alcohol drinkers. They get too upset when they are given not enough booze to fuel them for a long time. But there really are some times wherein they run out of alcohol supply. What’s left for them to drink is water.

In case of emergency situations such as running out of alcohol supply, the one thing you can do to still give them liquid to rehydrate them is by building a well.

Well is one of the buildings that are highly needed for your whole fortress. Unlike other bodies of water such as rivers and lakes, water from the well does not freeze during winter unless it is built incorrectly.

How To Build A Well Guide for Dwarf Fortress

When building a well, what you have to do is create a pit, fill it up with water, and then put a well on top of it. You can do this by making a ramp called a channel.

First, you have to look for an ideal spot where you want to place the well. Click the tile using the channel or after pressing u. It will take a while, but it is worth the wait after all.

When the tile is already set, assign a zone called pit/pond. Once done, you can designate it with the first or second option. However, you have to do this step four times on each side of the hole so that four dwarves can use the well at a time.

Once there is a hole already and the assigning of a zone is done, you can start filling this up with water using buckets. If you happen to not have any buckets, you can construct wooden barrels in the Carpenter’s Workshop.

Since there are already buckets available, the dwarves will automatically fill this up with water. 

You will know that it is done filling up if it already looks like this one.

To attach the well on top, go to Machines/Fluids, and then choose the Well. But before anything else, go first to the zone tab and suspend the filling sites. Simply click each tile on all the sides of the pit and click the pause button.

When you already placed the well on top of the pit, you will be asked to choose what material to use for it. You can freely choose whatever you want.

It is an indication that your well is done if it already looks like this.
