As you progress through Aska, you will discover and obtain a lot of different resources. One of the most important ones is going to be Iron Ore. Iron Ore is the raw ore that is needed to make Iron in Aska.
To make Iron in this game, you will need to carry out the whole blacksmithing process manually. We will be looking at what exactly you need to do to turn your Iron Ore into usable Iron.
How To Blacksmith & Get Iron
The whole process of turning Iron Ore into usable Iron has to be done manually. You will first need to smelt the Iron Ore to make Iron Bloom. After that, you will need to consolidate your bloom using a hammer on a Wood Anvil. Once that is done, the Iron Bloom can then be taken to the Forge where it can be shaped into a usable item.
Smelting Iron Ore
Before you can start working on your Iron Ore, make sure you have a Furnace. The Furnace will allow you to smelt the Iron Ore to make Iron Bloom.
When you open up the Furnace, you will see 4 empty rows where you can place items. Place your Iron Ore here alongside Charcoal. The image above shows a way to place the items in which your resources won’t go to waste.
Once you’ve placed the materials in the Furnace, you can light the Furnace and start the process. While most games will automatically turn Iron ore into Iron, Aska requires you to manually operate the Bellows.
When using the Bellows, you can blow air into the Furnace and increase the temperature using the E button on your keyboard. Doing nothing will make the temperature slowly go down. To transform the Iron Ore into Iron Bloom, you will need to keep the temperature between the 2 lines on the bar telling you the temperature. The image above shows this.
Doing this is very important, as keeping the temperature below the line will waste the Charcoal and your Iron Ore will remain Iron Ore. Going too high is also bad, as high temperatures will turn your Iron Ore into Slag. You can’t recover your Iron Ore once it turns into Slag, and Slag in this game doesn’t do much.
Next, take the Iron Bloom you just smelted and place it onto your Wood Anvil to consolidate it. All you have to do is press E to hit the Iron Bloom with your hammer. Do this for all sides of the Iron Bloom and you will end up with an Iron Bloom that is ready to be forged.
Forging
Like the Furnace, the Forge in this game will also require Charcoal to use it. You can add fuel to your Furnace by holding R when next to it. You can then place the Iron Bloom in your forge and wait for it to become hot. Iron Bloom will need to be hot before it can be forged.
With the Iron Bloom hot and ready, choose the item you want to forge using the hot Iron Bloom. The game will show you all the craftable items in the Create Task area. After selecting the item you want, press begin to start forging it.
Similar to Iron Bloom, any item that you forge will need to be consolidated using the Anvil. The process here is the exact same as before. Press E on your keyboard to hit the item and remove the Slag on top of it.
Once the Iron is clear of all Slag, you will need to place the item you just forged into a Trough. Doing this will cool down the forged item. Your Trough will need to have water in it, so make sure you have enough water.
Once the item is cooled down, you can use it however you want. So if you forged an axe head, you can craft an Iron Axe using that axe head. Iron is a resource that you will always need when playing Aska, so blacksmithing is an extremely useful skill to know.
