If there’s anything scary in the open seas of Sea of Thieves, that would definitely be the Megalodon. This giant shark is an encounter that none would dare take on all by themselves. In fact, taking on a Meg requires a four-man team to even have a chance of winning.

For new players, this can be a nightmare. And if you’re one of them, then this guide will teach you everything you need to know about this giant shark.

The Meg isn’t the only scary encounter that you’ll come across in Sea of Thieves. However, it’s definitely one of the scariest out there, just close to the mighty Kraken. Luckily, they only spawn rarely, but if you’re intent on finding one, sadly there’s no exact location to find a Meg.

This is because the Megalodon randomly spawns in the water, so you can technically encounter this beast at any point in your adventure. There’s no means of summoning one either, but you can increase your chances of finding one by keeping one simple thing in mind.

And that is the fact that a Megalodon will only spawn in an open body of water that’s far from the land.

As such, your best bet for finding a Meg is to go to the open sea far away from an island as much as possible. Then, at this point, all you need to do is sail the open seas until you come across a random Meg.

Megalodon Variants

Surprisingly, the Megalodon doesn’t just come with a single appearance. In fact, there are five different types of the Meg that you can find in the game. These are as follows:

• Hungering One
• Crested Queen
• Shadowmaw
• Ancient Terror
• Shrouded Ghost

Among them, the Shrouded Ghost is by far the rarest type as it tends to spawn so rarely that it might even just be a myth. It would be safe to assume that only a very few people were able to spot one in the open sea.

While there was this limited event called Shrouded Deep where players can take on a Shrouded Ghost, that won’t count as a natural encounter. So if you’re lucky enough to find one in your adventure, then make sure to take it on right away.

Also, while there are various types of Megalodon in the game, there’s really no difference between them except for their appearance and spawn rate. They are basically the same stat-wise and can be taken down using the same method you would use to defeat one.

You can also tell if a Megalodon is nearby once you start hearing a piece of ominous theme music. Just be careful, as the Meg will chase your ship once you’re inside its territory. As such, I highly recommend preparing everything you need to take on a Meg if you’re actively looking for it.

Killing the Megalodon

In order to kill a Meg, you’ll need enough supply of cannonballs depending on the type of ship you have. If you’re sailing on a Sloop, you’ll need around 12-15 cannonballs to take down a Megalodon. Meanwhile, it will take around 15-18 for the Brigantine and 30-32 for the Galleon.

Apart from cannonballs, you should also make sure that you have enough wooden planks during the encounter. This is because when a Megalodon attacks your ship, it will create around 1-5 holes which you need to patch up as quickly as possible.

Also, it’s worth noting that its attacks can throw you and your crew off the ship. If you’re unlucky enough to get bitten by the Meg while in the water, it will instantly kill you.

The general strategy for killing a Meg is to follow it as it starts circling your ship. Then, once it goes close, fire at it using all of the cannons that you have, and then rinse and repeat. Just keep in mind that the Meg’s attacks can create holes in your ship. So, I highly recommend assigning one player as a repairman and stationing him below the deck.

Cheesing the Megalodon

If you’re completely fine with cheesing, then you can use another method for taking the Meg that involves cheesing. You can do this with the help of some skeletons on nearby islands. These skeletons are often armed with cannons and will immediately fire at anyone that draws near the island.

You can use them to your advantage by luring the Megalodon toward a skeleton-inhabited island. Then you just let the skeletons take care of the shark for you. Since the Meg won’t be able to reach the skeletons, it will just keep on swimming on and about until the skeletons kill it.

If you manage to defeat the Megalodon, you will obtain around 4-6 meat as well as treasure items.
