Since you can go Phase Diving into Untethered Space, you’re ideal for collecting such samples! You just need to go slay a few Phase-Lost creatures to collect it. Read on, we’ll tell you how to complete this short quest.
Untethered Potential Quest Guide | WoW: The War Within
To start this quest, go to Shan’dorah in the K’aresh region. We’ve marked its general area on the map above for you. In there, you need to look for an NPC called Researcher Essarae. Her coordinates are 59.8, 29.0.
Simply talk to Essarae and hear what she has to say about the “Untethered Potential” quest, then accept the quest.
After accepting the quest, you’ll need to go directly northwest of your current location. Go to the Phase Conduit there, which we’ve marked on the map above. Its coordinates are 56.24, 21.52. Use that conduit to start Phase Diving and enter Untethered Space.

From the Phase Conduit, go down the hill to the south. Reach the bottom of the hill and you’ll find the entrance to Voidscar Cavern. Its coordinates are around 56.83, 24.03. Venture into the cavern when you’re ready.
Inside the cavern, look for Phase-Lost Creeper mobs. Kill them and loot them to collect Phase-Altered Essences. You’ll need to collect a total of 5 Phase-Altered Essences, so just keep killing and looting until you’ve got enough. Don’t feel too bad for these creepers, it’s all in the name of research!
Once you’ve obtained 5 Phase-Altered Essences, return to a Phase Conduit and use it to exit Phase Diving. Double-check that the objective is completed when you do this! If it didn’t, you might need to enter and exit Phase Diving again. Alternatively, just try relogging. This objective seems to bug out frequently.
Either way, just return to Researcher Essarae after you exit Phase Diving. Deliver the Phase-Altered Essences to complete the “Untethered Potential” quest in WoW: The War Within. That’s all there is to this one, it’s pretty simple.
