Surviving in the world of Smalland is not easy. There’s a lot of stuff you have to watch out for. There are giant creatures who will attack you on sight, weather extremes that can kill you if you’re unprepared, and a lot more.
So if you’re completely new to the game, you have to arm yourself with the right survival knowledge. That’s exactly what this ultimate beginner’s guide is for.
Ultimate Beginner’s Guide in Smalland: Survive the Wild
Smalland is pretty much like any other survival RPG out there. You have to craft tools to harvest resources, craft gear for protection and survival, and build a base for shelter.
That said, it also features quests that will reward you with certain stuff upon completion.
To increase your chances of survival, you’ll want to follow these steps:
Craft Armor as Soon as Possible
Early on in the game, you will be able to craft two different types of armor: Padded and Light. Each of them will offer you decent protection.
However, you want to prioritize crafting the Padded gear as each piece will grant you enough protection from the cold, especially during nighttime.
Without cold protection, you will suffer from cold damage which will eventually kill you.
In order to craft the armor pieces, you want to look for Herne and ask him to craft the armor for you. Fortunately, each piece only costs a few fibers to make.
Gather as Many Food as You Can
You will need food in order to replenish your blue bar which indicates your hunger meter. You want to make sure you’re fully satiated at all times in order to enjoy certain benefits such as health regeneration over time.
There are a bunch of food items you can find as you explore the world. In particular, you can look for a giant owl statue perched on top of a giant tree near the starting area. It will have a few food items at the top.
Interact with Owl Effigies
Owl effigies are these small owl statues that you can find throughout the map. Interacting with them will give you some hints and tips that you’ll need to increase your chances of survival.
Every owl effigy that you interact with will offer new information that you can use. This new information then gets stored in your Compendium which you can access via your inventory anytime you like.
Claim a Giant Tree as Your Base
A tree base is by far the best type of base in the game. Unlike normal ground bases, a tree base grants you protection from various creatures that will attack you.
This makes it a really safe choice, especially if you’re starting out.
However, you first need to claim a giant tree before you can make it your base. To do so, look for giant trees with giant mushroom caps growing on their trunk.
After that, talk to the gnome at the bottom, and he will instruct you to climb to the topmost platform to claim the tree. Simply make your way to the top by doing some parkour on the mushroom caps.
Once you make it to the top, look for the Gnome Effigy and interact with it to claim the base. You will then receive your own Tree Butler who will make a lift for you.
Tame a Creature to Use as a Mount
To traverse the world a lot faster, you’ll want to get yourself a mount. For this, we recommend taming the grasshopper as it can cover long distances within a short period.
If you don’t know how to tame a creature, you can check out our creature taming guide.
Be Careful when Crossing Bodies of Water
Don’t get tricked into jumping into streams of water whenever you like it. Unfortunately, your character isn’t good at swimming, so you will quickly drown should you find yourself jumping into a deep body of water.
If you’re lucky enough, you might be able to cross it, but as a general rule, just stay away from large and deep bodies of water as much as possible.
Use the Right Weapons when Fighting Enemies
When fighting hostile creatures, you’ll notice an icon right next to their name. This indicates whether the weapon you’re using is effective against them or not.
Yellow means that you’ll be doing decent damageagainst your target while white means that you’ll be doing far less damage than normal.
Upgrade to Stone Armor as Soon as Possible
Stone armor offers way more protection compared to the previous armor sets but with the downside of movement speed reduction.
That said, if you want to increase your chances of survival against creatures and the cold, you’ll want to upgrade to stone armor as soon as possible.
For this, you have to look for Kalev and ask him to craft stone armor pieces for you. Each armor piece will require a few stones, fibers, and resins to craft.
Create a Bed to Use as a Respawn Point
If you go out to the wild unprepared, you’ll most likely die from hostile creatures. In the event that your character dies, you will return to the nearest village. This can be a bummer, especially if you’ve already ventured out far into the wild.
To avoid that, you can craft a Simple Bed instead so you can use it as your respawn point. To do so, simply equip your builder’s hammer and choose the bed from the Interface section.
Place it on your desired spot and interact with it to activate it as a respawn point. You can also use it to rest, but you have to make sure it’s sheltered first.
Take Your Time Exploring the World
Lastly, just take your time as you explore the world of Smalland. The map is vast, and there are tons of things to discover along the way.
However, just make sure that you’re well-prepared before you head out. This way, you can reduce your chances of dying from creature attacks or cold weather.
