Are you trying to get your character upgraded in Silent Hill f? With so much to see and do in the new game, it’s hard to ensure you find everything in each playthrough. Check out this guide that takes you to all 22 Character Upgrades, also known as Ema.
Achievements (Trophies)
There is only one trophy associated with finding Ema. You need to find 18 to get the Close to the Sun trophy. Each Ema is a wooden plaque with bird art that can increase:
- Stamina
- Sanity
- Health
- Omamori Slots
You will use Ema plaques at a Hokora Shrine, with Faith.
So why are there 22 Ema, and only 18 are needed for the achievement? Well, the Omamori Slots are not included in getting the trophy.
You will need to play through the game multiple times to get all 22, or at least, the 18 you need for the trophy.
First Playthrough
Ebisugaoka Second Visit
Ema 1
On the long, horizontal road, head east. Stop about a house away before you reach a Hokora Shrine. Almost directly across from the Shrine sits this Ema.

Ema 2
For Ema #2, you have to go through the Storehouse and escape. And right before you get to Rinko’s house, there will be another house with a field beside it. The Character Upgrade will be outside this house on a trough.

Corridors
Ema 3
When you are in the corridors, go to the northwest area. This area has an Inari-sama emblem on a door that can’t be opened yet. The Ema will be on a box beside the door.

Ebisugaoka Third Visit
Ema 4
When you are trying to find Rinko and Shu, you will pass through a house. Once you go through the house, jump out of the window and head east. There is a path that leads to a Hokora Shrine; do not take this path. You will cross a bridge to follow a different path.
This path will become a dead end with some monsters lurking. Sitting on a stone wall, tucked in a narrow corner, will be this Ema.

Worship Hall
Ema 5
This Character Upgrade is in the area with Shu’s Memories Puzzle. When you are in the main room, go west, where you will pull a blue/red lever. Once you go through the blue door, you will see an illuminated hallway. Walk down the hallway and turn left, where you will see the plaque on a tall table.

Ebisugaoka Fourth Visit
Ema 6
This one is simple to grab as you make your way to the mountain refuge. You will find this Ema on a rock between some trees. It is easily identifiable on your map because it looks like there are two paths that loop around the rock and trees. It is right before you drop to the mountain refuge.

Main Hall
Ema 7
Once you complete the third ritual, you will be able to reveal hidden rooms by holding L2 next to them. To get to this room, go to the main hall and go to the west side of it. The Ema can be found in the room next to the one you received the Omamori (Crow) from. It’s on the right side as soon as you walk in.
There are several other collectables in this same room, including a document needed for other trophies. Check out our guide on how to find all the documents if you are looking for 100% completion on Silent Hill f.

Ema 8
When you are on your way to Hinako’s house, you will pass the very first Hokora Shrine in the game. You will then go through the streets next to it and turn left (or east if looking at the map) and walk down the street. At the end of the small road, you will look left, and on a bench, you will find this Ema.

Shimizu Residence
Ema 9
To get to this Ema, you will have to access the Calendar in the second area of the Shimizu Residence. This Emu is in the south part of the residence and is in the left room off of the hallway you enter from (if looking from the map). It’s on an elevated platform illuminated by greenish light.

Ema 10
You will use the Calendar again to access the third area of the residence. Go to the west of Hinako’s parents’ room, to the end of the hallway. You will see this Ema behind a watering can.

Ebisugaoka Sixth Visit
Ema 11
There will be a forced fight. You will be back at that same truck earlier, except take a right this time. Walk down the path until you see a red barrel across from a Hokora Shrine. That is where the Ema will be.

Second Playthrough
You have now unlocked the brooch and can now open Inari-sama Boxes and Doors. This allows you to find more Ema’s you couldn’t in the first playthrough.
Ebisugaoka First Visit
Ema 12
After passing the first Hokora Shrine, walk down the steps and turn right. It will be a little corner with a box on the ground. Open it and you will find this plaque (and a document).

Shrine Path
Ema 13
While you perform the Shrine Vault Puzzle, you can access a new area southeast. There are two paths; take the left one. The Character Upgrade is on a rock down the path.

Ebisugaoka Second Visit
Ema 14
There is a Hokora Shrine on the east of your map, on a long road. Right past this shrine, turn left into a small garden to find a box that you can open, which holds the document.

Ebisugaoka Third Visit
Ema 15
This one is a bit more hidden.
At the south of your map and on your way to the middle school, there will be some alleyways. Go up the stairs after the Hokora Shrine and then turn left. Go through the outside of a building and behind another building on your left, and you will find the plaque on a stool.

Worship Hall
Ema 16
This one is also a bit tricky to access.
In the southern area of the map and down a hallway, there will be an area you can squeeze through on your left. You will then walk straight and turn at your first right. It’s through this door that you may find the Ema on the desk.

Ebisugaoka Fourth Visit
Ema 17
You will go up a set of stairs until you see a gazebo. If you walk to the left of it, you will find the box surrounded by some stone décor.

Main Hall
Ema 18
Go up the set of stairs that are to the east on your map. You will then go down a long hallway. Walk around the large room to avoid the holes in the floor and go through the doorway (this is on the right when you walk into the room).
Turn left and go through a door, which will take you down a set of steps that lead to the outside.
Once outside, cross the small bridges, keeping left until you are met with a pathway that goes right. Take and follow this path to the elevated building. Once inside, the Character Upgrade will be on top of a cabinet, next to some other cabinets.
Ebisugaoka Fifth Visit
Ema 19
Once you pass through the park, you will come upon a house. It is right before a Hokora Shrine. A box will be sitting in the yard, on the left side.

Shimizu Residence
Ema 20
Once you navigate through the house, you can get to this Ema.
Starting in the first area, you will walk west through a hallway. Once you see a door, you will go straight (or north) by two rooms. The box is sitting on a pile of other boxes and may be hard to spot.

Treasure Hall
Ema 21
After you have earned your two crests, you will enter a room with Fox statues (a puzzle room) to gain the third. Once you enter this room, you will turn right and enter an Inari-sama door. In the back right of the room, you will find this plaque.

Third Playthrough
Ebisugaoka Fifth Visit
Ema 22
You are going to encounter a forced fight after going through the park. You will then go up a set of stairs and turn right down a path. Follow this until you find the Ema sitting on a rock to your left and an Ancient Jizo Statue in front of you.

That is all of the Ema in the game that upgrades your character. You should have gotten the Close to the Sun trophy now. Just another stepping stone on your way to 100% completion.
