The fishing system in this game is quite simple, but also very rewarding. Fish you catch can be used for meals, completing tasks for various characters, or sold for a solid profit. It’s a good way to make a living!
In this guide, I’ll tell you everything you need to go fishing.
How to Get a Fishing Rod
The first thing you’ll need to go fishing is, as you might’ve guessed, a Fishing Rod. It can be equipped as a primary or secondary weapon, allowing you to bring it out just like you would your guns!

Road to Vostok School Map GuideApr 10, 2026As with most things in this game, though, the Fishing Rod has no set spawn location. You’ll need to explore to find it randomly, with it seemingly being most common in the Village (Area 05). The Generalist NPC might also have it at times.
How to Start Fishing
When you’ve found and equipped a Fishing Rod, you just need to find any body of water. Hold Left Click or the Right Trigger to ready up, then release to cast the line.
While fishing in this game, it is important to keep in mind that fish are segmented into procedurally-generated hotspots. These are represented by the red blocks in the example above.
So, after throwing the line, wait for it to slowly come to you. You can also pull it by tapping Left Click or Right Trigger again, but wait a few seconds between taps to lure the fish.
Essentially, you just need to get a feel for where the hotspots are. The hotspots contain a finite number of fish, but it’s a good idea to keep trying to get the line in the same place until you exhaust a hotspot.
When a fish bites, you’ll notice a pull on your Fishing Rod. As soon as you feel the bite, just hold Left Click or Right Trigger to reel it in. You’ll automatically catch the fish and put it in your inventory, provided you’ve got the empty space for it!
