Palia has recently released a new update called Elderwood, which includes an entirely new region and various other activities and collectibles that you can find. There are plenty of new quests for you to complete as well, and this includes Bugging Out. In this guide, we will go through the steps you need to take in order to start and finish this quest.

Palia Bugging Out Quest Walkthrough

Before we get started, you have to meet one of two conditions to actually start the quest. First, you can either tell Subira that you want to catch some bugs during the quest called “The Nature of Shadows”. This will automatically start Bugging Out.

If you did not choose that option, you can still get it by continuing to progress through the main story until Subira has a dialogue option “I’d like to catch infected bugs”. Either of these two options will start the Bugging Out quest, so you cannot lock yourself out of it.

Once you have started the quest, seek out Auni and speak with him to progress to the next part. He will move to Najuma’s place in Bahari Bay, and upon speaking with them, you can find Auni again at Elderwood, as shown in the map image below.

He will be found above one of the mushrooms sticking out of the side of a giant tree within the Deep Woods. You will need to do a bit of climbing to reach him, and then you will have to speak with him again at the bottom.

Once you are done with this optional objective, you have to collect a bunch of items for the main part of the quest itself. You will need to find the following:

  • 3x Batterfly Beans – These can be found in various places in and around Mitana Grove. They are usually found beside the base of trees.
  • 3x Piksii Berries – You can find plenty of these in the Deep Woods zone. Just look for them beside bushes on the ground.
  • 3x Staircase Mushrooms – There are plenty of these in and around the Central Stables of Elderwood. Just run around and you will find them on the ground
  • 10x Infected Essence – These things are found all throughout Elderwood and can also be obtained from harvesting various types of infected resources.

Once you have all of the necessary resources, return to Najuma at Bahari Bay. Upon turning in all of the materials, you will receive 20 Elderwood Smoke Bombs as well as the recipe for making them. That should be the end of the gathering part of the quest!

Before you proceed, if you are curious about the recipe itself, you simply need 1x whitestone, 1x silk, and 10x infected essence in order to craft one. You should have more than enough to complete the quest though.

You just need to catch five infected insects. There are a lot of them all around the map, so just go and do that before returning to Subira to turn it in. Congratulations, that should be the quest all done! Doing this will start the One Step Behind quest while also unlocking additional quests that unlock the ability to hunt or catch infected creatures and fish!
