Horses are the newest addition to Palia and they came with the Royal Highlands expansion. Every player gets a free Dawnspur by completing the Before the Dawn quest. Once you have yours, the customization options are what make the system genuinely interesting. You can change coats, patterns, and traits through special cookies to make your horse feel like your own.
I will walk you through exactly how it all works so you can build the horse you actually want rather than just riding around on whatever the game hands you.
Customizing Your Horse
After completing the “Before the Dawn” quest you will be handed a free Dawnspur to get you started. If you want more you can purchase additional ones from the Ranching Store for 5000 gold each.
Once you have your horse, head to your ranch and interact with the one you want to customize. After interacting with it you will be given a prompt to rename it if you want to. Once that is done click on the Feed button at the bottom and feed it a Cookie of the Day. This will randomly apply a cosmetic trait to your horse.
The result is completely random each time so you may not get exactly what you are looking for straight away. You can feed your horse as many Cookies of the Day as you want until you land on the look you are after. You won’t get precise control but you do get a decent amount of variety to work with over time.
How to Obtain Cookies of the Day
There are two ways to get your hands on the Cookie of the Day. The first is to purchase it directly from the Ranching Guild for 20 Ranching Medals, which becomes available once you reach Ranching Level 10.
The second way is through Uncommon Treat Packs which have a chance to drop a “Cookie of the Day” as a random reward. You can obtain one or more Uncommon Treat Packs by donating an animal, with the number of packs you receive depending on the overall value of the animal you donate.

That’s It
That covers everything you need to know about customizing your horse in Palia. The Cookie of the Day system is a little on the random side. But with enough patience and a steady supply of Ranching Medals or donated animals, you will eventually get your horse looking exactly the way you want it.
