Obor is the Hill Giant boss tucked away in the Edgeville Dungeon and one of the only proper bosses available to F2P players in OSRS. He sits at combat level 106, hits reasonably hard, and has a knockback attack that can catch you off guard if you are not prepared for it. For Ironmen especially he is a priority, since he is the only F2P source of the rune kiteshield outside of smithing.
Getting to Obor requires a bit of prep work but the fight itself is straightforward once you understand what he does. In this guide, I will walk you through the best gear setups, strategies, and everything else you need to take him down cleanly every time.
F2P Obor Boss Guide
Before getting into the boss fight, let me quickly go over how to reach Obor. He is located inside the Edgeville Dungeon, which sits west of Varrock. I have marked the exact location of the dungeon’s entrance on the map below so you can head straight there.

Once you are inside the dungeon, the first thing you want to do is grab the Brass Key. This is important because it unlocks a shortcut that saves you a lot of time between kills. It makes the whole farming process a lot smoother once you have it. Watch the video below to see exactly where to find the Brass Key inside the dungeon.
Edgeville Dungeon Shortcut
With the Brass Key in your possession, you can use it to enter through a shed that sits close to Edgeville. This is the shortcut that makes getting to Obor significantly faster. I have marked the exact location of the shed in the image below.

From the location where you picked up the Brass Key and where the shortcut is, simply head straight and you will reach Obor’s Lair.
Giant Keys
To access Obor’s Lair, you need a Giant Key. The good news is that the key is not consumed when you open the lair gate itself. Instead, you hold onto it and use it to open the chest inside the lair after you have defeated Obor. This is worth knowing because the chest is actually where the best loot comes from. It offers significantly better rewards than what you get from defeating Obor alone.
As an F2P player, the best way to farm Giant Keys is by killing Hill Giants inside the Edgeville Dungeon. The drop rate is 1/128 from Hill Giants. You can also get them from Obor himself at a much better drop rate of 1/16, which makes farming him consistently a good way to keep yourself stocked up on keys over time. One more thing worth knowing is that Giant Keys are stackable, so you can stockpile as many as you want.
Best Way to Defeat Obor
Obor has a 20% elemental weakness to Earth, which makes Magic the best way to deal with him. On top of his melee attacks, Obor will also throw rocks at you that deal a lot of damage. This counts as ranged damage, so you can use the Protect from Missiles prayer to protect yourself from it. It will halve the damage coming in, which makes a noticeable difference in how much food you burn through during the fight.
Now let me get into the boss fight itself. Obor is fairly simple once you get the hang of it. The key is maintaining your distance throughout the entire fight. Before you drop down and engage him, make sure you activate the Protect from Missiles prayer.
The best way to go about the fight is by using Snare on him constantly. Snare will keep Obor bound in place for around 10 seconds, giving you a solid window to attack from range and deal damage safely. Once it wears off, cast another Snare straight away and keep repeating this pattern until he is down. Snare requires level 50 Magic so if you are not quite there yet, Bind is a viable alternative at level 20. The downside is that Bind only holds Obor for around 5 seconds instead of 10, which means you will be casting it a lot more frequently throughout the fight.
What About Ranged or Melee Builds?
You can also use Ranged against Obor if you prefer, but Magic is definitely the stronger option overall due to his elemental weakness. Ranged can still get the job done but you will not be putting out the same damage numbers as you would with a Magic setup.
Melee on the other hand is something I would not recommend, especially as an F2P player. Obor deals a serious amount of damage up close and has that knockback attack that will constantly disrupt your positioning. Fighting him in melee range means you are taking the full brunt of his hits without much room to recover, which will burn through your food supply very quickly. It is not impossible but it makes the fight a lot harder than it needs to be.
Best Gear Setups
For the Magic build, bring your best staff and ideally an Earth Staff since Obor has that elemental weakness to Earth. Make sure you have enough runes stocked up for your best Earth spells and do not forget to bring Snare as it is the key component of the whole strategy.
For Ranged, I recommend going with Green d’hide armor and Mithril Arrows as your setup. You will still need Snare here as well to keep Obor at a distance. If you do not have level 50 Magic for Snare, Bind works as a substitute since it only requires level 20.
If for some reason you have decided to go Melee, then bring your absolute best armor because you are going to need it. You will be taking a significant amount of damage up close and having strong defensive gear is the only thing that will keep you standing long enough to finish the fight. As a F2P player, I would strongly advise against this.
Best Food Options
For food, Swordfish and Lobsters are both solid options that will keep you healed through the fight. Swordfish heal 14 HP and Lobsters heal 12 HP, making both reliable choices.
Anchovy Pizza works too but keep in mind that it only heals 9 HP per bite and takes two bites to fully consume, which means it takes longer to get your health back up compared to a single bite food. In a tight spot where Obor is hitting hard, that extra bite can cost you, so Swordfish and Lobsters are the safer picks overall.
Wrapping Up
Obor is not the most exciting boss in the game but for F2P players, he is one of the better ones to farm. he key is using Magic with Snare to keep your distance, bringing enough Swordfish or Lobsters, and stocking up on Giant Keys from Hill Giants before you start. Stick to that strategy and you will have no trouble taking him down consistently.
