If you’re looking to tackle The Ides of Milk, OSRS‘s newest F2P quest, you’re in for some classic, weird Jagex humor. Starting just northwest of Lumbridge, the quest centers around Cassius, Seth Groats, and some highly suspicious dairy samples.

The quest is pretty easy to complete and won’t take you that long. This guide covers exactly where to go and what to click so you can wrap up the farm drama, unlock the new Brutus cow boss, and start going for drops like the Bottomless Milk Bucket.

The Ides of Milk Quest Guide

Before starting the quest, you need to have a Combat level of 15. You also need to bring an armor, weapon and some food as there will be a boss fight later on in the quest. To start the quest, you need to make your way to Lumbridge and talk to Cassius. You can find Cassius above the pond at the location that I have marked on the map below.

After the initial conversation with Cassius ends, you will get a chat option to “Start The Ides of Milk Quest“, click on “yes“. This will officially start the quest. After finishing the rest of the conversation with Cassius, head over to the cow pen located on the right side of the river. In the cow pen, you need to talk to Gillie Groats. I have marked her location on the map below.

During your conversation with Gillie Groats, you will be presented with a couple of chat options. You need to select the third chat option stating “Can you share what makes your cows so productive?“. Once your conversation with Gillie Groats finishes, head north to the chicken farm where Seth Groats house is located. I have marked its location in the image below.

Getting The Groats Principles

Go inside the house and talk to Seth Groats. Once your conversation finishes, search the Shelves located near the bed inside the house. You will get the The Groats Principles book.

Here’s a video which shows how to get The Groats Principles by searching the shelves inside Seth Groats’ house.

Once you have the book, head back to Cassius and talk to him to hand over The Groats Principles. During the conversation, Cassius will give you a Milk sample. Select the Milk sample in your inventory and click on Drink Milk sample. You will receive 1 damage on account of the milk tasting very bad. And once your conversation with Cassius ends, he will give you another Milk sample. Do NOT drink this one.

Now make your way to the Lumbridge Castle, you can quickly get there by using Lumbridge Home Teleport. Inside the castle, head to the second floor and talk to Duke Horacio.

This video shows how to reach Duke Horacio from the Lumbridge Home Teleport location.

Permission for the Permit

After talking to Duke Horacio, he will ask you to talk to Gillie Groats to get permission for the permit allowing you to sell milk. Make your back to the cow pen and talk to Gillie Groats. Once your conversation finishes, drink the Milk sample you have and then talk to her again.

Once Gillie sees you actually drink that awful milk, she realizes that your product is no threat to her business. She agrees to help you out but only if you take care of an aggressive bull for her. To do so, make your way to the top of the cow pen, click on the fence and then select Release Gate. You will get a prompt in chat saying “Release the bull?“, click on “yes” to start the boss fight.

Release the bull to start the Brutus boss fight.

How to deal with Brutus the Cow Boss

If you are a high level player, you won’t have much trouble taking care of Brutus. But if you are a low level player then here are a few tips to help you out:

  • Brutus standard melee attacks max out at 3 damage so you don’t have to worry too much about that. But his two special attacks (charge and slam) can deal damage up to 19 so you do need to avoid getting hit by these.
  • Charge: if the text *growls* appears over his head, then he will charge forward in a straight line. To avoid this, simply move to the left or right. Don’t move backwards as you will get hit.
  • Slam: if the text *snorts* appears over his head, then he will get up on two and slam the ground in front of him causing damage up to two tiles. To avoid this, move backwards. Brutus can repeat this move multiple times in succession so be wary of that.

Finishing the Quest

After defeating Brutus, go back to Gillie Groats and talk to her. Once you do that, go back to Cassius and talk to him one final time to finish the quest. You will get 1 Quest Point along with permanent access to the Brutus boss fight.

Now go back and talk to Gillie Groats to get the rest of the quest rewards which includes the Cowbell Amulet and a Magic Lamp. The Cowbell Amulet lets you instantly travel to the cow pen and the Magic Lamp awards you with 1000 XP which you can put into a skill of your choice.

That’s It!

And with that, you’ve officially survived the dairy disaster and completed The Ides of Milk. It’s a fast, straightforward quest that perfectly captures that classic RuneScape charm, all while handing out some solid early game rewards. The Magic Lamp is a great quick XP boost, and the Cowbell Amulet makes getting around the Lumbridge farms a whole lot easier.

Now that you have permanent access to Brutus, you can come back whenever you’re ready to farm his drop table. Whether you’re hunting for the Bottomless Milk Bucket or just want some low level bossing practice, the cow pen is officially open for business. Or if you want to grind something less then I suggest checking my OSRS Agility Training guide which will take you from level 1 to 99!
