The Echo Thermonuclear Smoke Devil is the Kandarin Echo boss in OSRS Leagues 6 Demonic Pacts, and it is one of the most rewarding Echo bosses in the entire League for magic builds. It drops two unique items. The Devil’s Element forces a 30% elemental weakness onto every target you fight, and the Shadowflame Quadrant is a one handed staff that fires a secondary spell hit at 40% of your primary damage while also acting as an infinite rune source that autocasts from any spellbook.

Before you can even attempt the Echo version, you need at least 93 Slayer and a Smoke Devil task to get your hands on a Kandarin Echo Orb, which drops from the regular Thermonuclear Smoke Devil at a 1 in 50 rate. In this guide, I will cover everything you need to know to take it down efficiently and get both drops.

How to Easily Defeat Echo Thermonuclear Smoke Devil

For this fight, a magic build is the way to go. Since you are farming the boss specifically for the Shadowflame Quadrant, you should already be running a magic focused setup anyway so this works out naturally.

The boss has a 20% weakness to the Air element, which means bringing Air spells is the smart choice here as you will be hitting more consistently and squeezing out extra damage compared to other spell types. On top of your magic setup, you also want to bring a ranged weapon with a long range attack radius. The Hunters’ Sunlight Crossbow is a solid pick for this.

I would strongly recommend investing into Air and Water spells. Air spells will be your primary damage dealer given the boss’s 20% weakness to that element, but having Water spells available as well gives you access to over healing on your HP. This means that even if you make a mistake and take a hit you were not expecting, you have that extra buffer to keep you in the fight without having to rely much on food items.

So, before heading into the boss room, over heal your HP past 150. You also need Protect From Missiles and Protect From Magic prayers for this fight since the boss does both magic and ranged attacks.

Defeating Echo Thermonuclear Smoke Devil

As the boss fight starts, it will spawn a ring of 12 protective resonance tiles around itself. It will then launch 12 orbs at you in a predictable pattern. These orbs deal either Ranged or Magic damage depending on their color. Red orbs deal Ranged damage. Light blue orbs deal Magic damage.

The attacks come in 4 groups of 3, totaling 12 orbs per cycle. It always starts with three Ranged attacks, then three Magic, and continues alternating in that pattern.

Resonance Tiles

To protect yourself, stand directly on top of a resonance tile and activate the correct protection prayer. Standing on a resonance tile reduces all incoming damage from the boss by 50% regardless of which prayer you are using. However, protection prayers only negate damage entirely if you are standing on a resonance tile at the time. So positioning is just as important as prayer here.

Special Attack

After the 12 orb cycle is complete, the boss will begin charging a powerful special attack. You will see a charging bar appear above its health bar indicating the progress. This attack scales with distance. The closer you are when it fires, the more damage it deals. The moment you see it start charging, run as far away from the boss as possible. Doing this will reduce the damage to a minimal amount.

There is one important trick to keep in mind when the boss begins charging its special attack. Just before or as soon as it starts charging, make sure you fire at least one attack at it using your crossbow or any ranged weapon. The reason for this is that the boss will cast a protection prayer against the last attack style it received damage from.

So if the last hit it took was a Magic hit, it will protect against Magic and you will be unable to deal Magic damage effectively for the next cycle. By throwing out a Ranged attack just before you run to the edge of the arena, you trick the boss into praying against Ranged instead. This leaves it completely open to Magic damage once the special attack is done. And after the special attack goes off, it will spawn the 12 resonance tiles again and the whole cycle repeats from the beginning.

Enraged State

Once the boss reaches 120 HP, which is 50% of its total health, it enters its enraged state. In this phase it begins alternating between Magic and Ranged attacks much more rapidly. Instead of three of each, it fires one Magic attack followed immediately by one Ranged attack and keeps alternating at that pace.

One useful thing to know is that the pattern for the entire enraged phase is determined by whichever attack type it opens with when it first enters this state. So if the first orb it fires is a Magic orb, you can expect it to follow that exact Magic first pattern for the remainder of the fight without any deviation.

The resonance tiles and charging special attack remain the same. Everything else about the fight stays consistent. The key difference is that you now need to switch your protection prayers much faster to keep up with the alternating attack pattern.

If your prayer switches are not sharp, this phase will punish you quickly. That said, if you are struggling to keep up with the rapid prayer switches, there is a simpler approach you can fall back on. Simply keep one protection prayer active the entire time and tank the hits from the other attack style.

It is not the most efficient way to handle it. But it is far more manageable for players still getting comfortable with the fight. Just make sure you are always standing on the resonance tiles when doing this. That 50% damage reduction will be doing a lot of the heavy lifting for you.

Here’s a quick walkthrough of the entire Echo Thermonuclear Smoke Devil boss following the mentioned strategy.

Wrapping Up

That covers everything you need to know to take down the Echo Thermonuclear Smoke Devil in League 6. Both the Shadowflame Quadrant and the Devil’s Element have a 1 in 25 drop chance. Both are guaranteed on your 50th kill if you have not received them earlier. The pattern takes a couple of tries to get used to. But once you get the hang of it, the boss becomes very easy to farm.
