Fuel Guide & Location to Prevent Running Out of Fuel in Last Train Home
When you run out of fuel in Last Train Home, you won’t be able to drive your train any further until you can get some more. Apart from the movement of the train, fuel also serves as a resource for your infantry’s stoves to heat the train cars’ interiors – yeah, it’s pretty important.
Given this, running out of fuel can be a huge pain – usually, you will need to reload to your last checkpoint to avoid this or send your troops on really long trips to Places of Interest to get more.

Difficulty
One of the easiest things you can do is change the game’s difficulty. If you head to the Options screen, you should find the difficulty preset and the Fuel and Food Consumption settings under Management Modifiers. There are 4 difficulty settings in the game.
What’s interesting about Last Train Home is that the difficulty settings aren’t necessarily ranked from easiest to hardest, but are characterized by which aspect of the game players would want to focus on more: Commander, Quartermaster, Tactician, and Road Trip.
Any other setting apart from Tactician will give you 100% Fuel and Food Consumption. This means that you will lose fuel and food at 100% of the rate that the game originally had it set to.
Set the difficulty to Tactician to set this to 70% or take advantage of the custom difficulty feature and set this modifier to the lowest end (50%).
Upgrades
Stoves
It might be hard to miss, but apart from running the train, Fuel is also used in Last Train Home in the infantry vans. Click on a train car and go to the Repairs and Upgrades page.
Under Heating, you will see that every stove consumes 1 Fuel item per 3 hours. This means that in a whole day, a train car can consume 8 Fuel items in a day.
Keep this in mind so you don’t start randomly upgrading all your train cars to have a stove because these can drastically burn through your fuel source if you’re not mindful.
Workers
Having more efficient workers can also improve your fuel efficiency. Higher-level workers will have a bigger chance of saving some fuel when feeding the locomotive engine.
You can view this by clicking on the train head and going to the Basic Activities page. You’ll see the Workers tab where you can see which of your soldiers are assigned as workers here.
Open the Soldier Overview and click the Roles tab. You can determine which soldier is higher level and is more efficient. The more efficient a worker, the less fuel he’ll use.
Improved Boiler
You can upgrade the boiler of your locomotive engine at the Repairs and Upgrades page. An improved boiler will decrease the Fuel burning speed by 20%. Upgrade this the moment you get to Chapter 2 to give yourself an easier time in the game. This upgrade costs 100 Metal.
Speed
The speed of your train will also affect your fuel consumption. There are two speed modes in the game: Normal and Overdrive. Overdrive will result in faster speeds, but less efficient fuel consumption. To conserve fuel, try to stay on Normal speed as much as possible. This may mean that you get to your destination slower, but you will save on some Fuel.
Where Can You Get More Fuel?
Merchant
It isn’t guaranteed that all merchants will have fuel to sell. Sometimes you can get lucky and find some fuel this way, but it’s never sure. This isn’t the most reliable way to get some Fuel, but it never hurts to try when you can make the trip to one.
Point of Interest
If you go to battle, you can see that fuel can be a potential reward when you win some battles. You can view what possible resources you can gain from a battle under the Difficulty of a mission. Hover over each icon and check whether Fuel is one of them.
This can be a bit of a gamble because there is always the possibility of losing battles, but if you succeed, you’re guaranteed to get some fuel.
And that’s it for how to get Fuel in Last Train Home. We hope that this guide may be of use to you as you travel the Czech countryside and make it back home.
