Since Windrose is a game all about pirates, you’re likely surprised to know that it’s quite a process to unlock Gunpowder.

In fact, the ability to make your own Gunpowder doesn’t unlock until you’re decently far in the game. You need to complete the first “region”, for one, which can take around 10 hours for the average player! And that’s just one requirement…

Read on and I’ll give you all of the details on how to unlock the Gunpowder crafting schematic.

Gather Sulfur in the Foothills

To unlock Gunpowder, you’ll first need to reach the Foothills biome as part of the game’s progression. That requires you to eliminate the threat in the Coastal Jungle first.

Technically, you can stumble upon the Foothills biome by exploring. However, doing so before clearing the Coastal Jungle won’t allow you to unlock schematics from Discoveries, which is what you need.

Once you’ve reached the Foothills, look for Sulfur and mine it using a Pickaxe. It looks like a white stone with green-ish yellow markings, as shown in the example above.

Now, collecting any amount of Sulfur itself will unlock the Homemade Gunpowder schematic itself. However, you do still need to do a bit more work, that’s not all you need!

Unlock and Use the Millstones Building

Next up, you’ll need to look for Ancient Farm POIs within the Foothills. You can find and gather Corn near these Ancient Farms. Doing this for the first time will unlock the Millstones building. Make sure to get Fertile Soil for farming, while you’re at it!

Once you’ve unlocked the Millstones, you can craft it with the following resources:

  • 15 Wood – Gathered by chopping down trees.
  • 1 Millstone Parts – Can be crafted at the Workbench using 15 Stones.

Build and place the Millstones and you’ll then be able to use it to craft the Homemade Gunpowder, which requires the following:

  • 20 Ash – Can be made at the Millstones using Charcoal or at the Charcoal Kiln using Hardwood.
  • 10 Sulfur – Mine it while in the Foothills, as explained earlier.

With all of that said, that’s the entire process required to unlock and craft Gunpowder in Windrose! It’s definitely going to take a while to get everything, but at least now you know what to do.

Have you also been wondering about how to fish? That also becomes available around the time you reach the Foothills! For details, check out our Windrose fishing guide.
