Windrose takes a more Souls-like approach to combat than you might expect from a pirate survival game. Stamina management, positioning, and landing well timed parries all matter a lot. Picking the right weapon early on makes a noticeable difference in how smoothly you get through the first few hours.
The good news is that a couple of weapons stand out clearly in the early game. They are also accessible without too much effort. Weapons in Windrose scale with one of three stats. Strength, Agility, or Precision. Picking something that matches where you are putting your points matters as much as the weapon itself. In this guide I will cover the best options for the early game so you are not wasting your first few hours with something that will let you down.
Best Early Game Weapons
Here are the best weapons for early game that will carry you into mid game and are easy to come by:
Rapier of a Thousand Cuts
The Rapier of a Thousand Cuts is a one handed sword. It scales with the Precision stat. Its base stats are decent but honestly that is not what makes this weapon worth using. The real draw is its special skill which causes Bleeding on hit. Every time you deal damage it applies a Bleeding stack, and it can build up to a maximum of 5 stacks. Each stack ticks for 25 damage per second. This means a fully stacked target is taking 125 damage every second just from the bleed alone.
In practice this means you do not need to go all in on every enemy. You just need to tag them enough times to get those stacks building and then let the bleed do the heavy lifting for you. This makes it especially effective against bosses like Hands, where sustained damage over time matters a lot more than landing big individual hits.
It drops as random loot from Traveller’s Camps and treasure chests scattered across the world. Keep an eye out for it as you explore. However if you want a more reliable shot at getting it early, there is a chest buried at the first camp with the red cloth tied to the tree. That chest has a notably high chance of dropping it. You can also get it during the Underground Network quest. If you are working through that questline make sure you are looting everything thoroughly along the way.
Blunderbuss | Reliable Blunderbuss
The Blunderbuss uses the Agility stat and functions as a two handed ranged weapon. It is genuinely one of the hardest hitting weapons in the game when used correctly. Its damage output at close range is incredible and it can chunk through enemy health bars in a way that few other weapons can match.
The key thing to keep in mind is that it rewards aggressive play. You want to be getting up close and personal with it rather than trying to use it at range where it loses a lot of its effectiveness.
If you can get your hands on the Reliable Blunderbuss, the rare version of the weapon, things get even better. At close range your shots have a small chance to knock enemies down, which opens up follow up opportunities and gives you a window to reload or reposition without taking hits back.
The Epic rarity version takes things a step further by reducing the amount of gunpowder each shot consumes, which is a genuinely useful perk given how quickly you can burn through ammo with this thing. Both versions have a chance to drop from pirate chests out in the world.
Pistol | Reliable Pistol
The Pistol is a one handed ranged weapon that scales with the Precision stat. It is not going to be your primary damage dealer and it is not really designed to be. Where it earns its place is as a secondary weapon for mid range engagements, giving you a reliable option to pull out when you need to deal damage without closing the gap on an enemy.
It fits naturally into any build that already has a melee weapon in the primary slot, letting you soften up targets before switching into melee or pick off enemies that are keeping their distance.
If you can get your hands on the Reliable Pistol, it becomes significantly more useful in sustained fights. It can fire three shots in a row without needing to reload, which removes one of the biggest frustrations of using a pistol in the middle of a hectic boarding fight.
The Epic rarity version takes it even further by dealing 15% bonus damage to pirates, outlaws, and other cutthroats. Given that the majority of enemies you will be fighting in Windrose fall into exactly those categories, that bonus is active in practically every fight you get into and adds up to a meaningful damage increase over time. You can obtain both versions of the Pistol by looting various pirate chests around the world.
Cutlass
The Cutlass is an agility based one handed weapon that is a solid all rounder. It works particularly well if you are mixing melee and ranged combat into your playstyle. It costs less stamina to swing than most other weapons and its slashing attacks can hit multiple targets at once. This makes it a genuinely useful tool for crowd control when you are getting swarmed.
What makes it stand out though is its passive effect. Every hit you land applies a stack of Take Aim, which can build up to a maximum of 9 stacks. Your next ranged shot after building those stacks deals 10% bonus damage per stack, meaning a fully stacked shot is hitting for 90% additional damage on top of your base output.
If you are running a build that switches between melee and a pistol or musket regularly, the Cutlass fits into that loop extremely naturally and can put out some seriously impressive burst damage when the timing is right. You can get this from various kinds of pirate chests.
Greatsword
This is a two handed heavy weapon that scales with the Agility stat. It is one of the more well rounded options in the game once you get your hands on it. Despite being a heavy weapon it is surprisingly fast to swing, which is not something you would expect from something of its size.
Its sweeping attacks cover a wide arc and have solid reach, making it extremely effective at hitting multiple enemies in a single strike. This is where it really shines. In boarding situations where you are pushing onto an enemy ship and getting swarmed from multiple directions, this weapon lets you clear out groups of enemies quickly and efficiently without having to pick them off one at a time.
The main thing to keep in mind is the stamina cost. Heavy weapons will drain your stamina faster than lighter options. You need to be mindful of your stamina management during extended fights and not just spam attacks freely. You can pick this one up as a random drop from various pirate chests out in the world.
Rapier
The Rapier uses the Precision stat and works as a one handed weapon. It is built around speed and accuracy rather than raw power. It delivers quick successive strikes that add up to a surprisingly high damage output when you are landing them consistently.
The attacks themselves are precise, pinpoint stabs rather than wide sweeping slashes. This means that it excels in single target situations where you can focus all of that pressure onto one enemy. It is not the best choice when you are surrounded by a group since the narrow hitbox will not catch multiple targets the way a Cutlass or heavier weapon would. You can get this from various kinds of pirate chests.

Wrapping Up
That covers the best weapons to get you through the early game in Windrose. Getting the right weapon early makes a bigger difference than most people realize. Especially once you start getting into regular boarding fights and need to clear enemy ships fast.
Speaking of ships, once you have your combat sorted, the next thing worth focusing on is upgrading to a better vessel. Check out our guide on how to get the Frigate in Windrose to see what it takes to get your hands on the best ship in the game.
