Farming is one of the most useful features in Windrose, and this complete guide will help you get to grips with the system.
Thankfully, as you’re about to find out, farming in this game is extremely simple. There is basically no maintenance required, so it’s more a matter of figuring out how to unlock and use the system itself.
In this guide, I’ll tell you everything you need to know about farming.
How to Unlock Farming

First things first, you’ll need to unlock farming itself. For that, you’ll first need to fully clear the Coastal Jungle as part of the game’s main story quests. Eliminate the threat in the region to be able to access discoveries in the Foothills region.

Once you’ve achieved that, you’ll need to go to any Foothills island and look for Ancient Farm POIs. Due to procedural generation, their location is different for everybody. Nonetheless, they show up on the map, as shown above.

When you find and reach an Ancient Farm, look for Fertile Soil mounds in the vicinity of the farm. Break them with a Pickaxe to collect the Fertile Soil for your own needs.
This discovery is the base of your farm! You can use Fertile Soil to craft Seedbeds, which are in the Farming section of your Building Panel, as shown above. You need 5 Fertile Soils per Seedbed.
How to Farm

Now that you can make Seedbeds, you just need to make and place a few of them. My one tip for their placement is to make sure that the top is fully out of the ground, if you want them in the ground. Otherwise, you won’t be able to use them.
Then, once you have some Seedbeds ready, you’ll need to plant whichever crop you wish. All of the crops are found in the Farming section of your Building Panel, just like the Seedbeds.

Placing them works the same as every other “building”. The only requirement being that they need to be on top of a Seedbed. You can tell they’re ready to plant when they’re highlighted green instead of red.
Now, to get the crops themselves, you’ll need to explore the world. Find and collect the crops out in the wild and you’ll get some seeds. Every crop requires its respective seeds to plant.
It’s worth noting that you’ll also get some seeds in return whenever you collect your own crops. However, you generally don’t get enough to be self-sufficient in this game. You’ll still need to explore and get seeds from wild crops.

Alternatively, you can also purchase some seeds from Merchants. Purchase the “Merchant Contract: Food” from the People of Tortuga Provisioner in Tortuga, which you reach through the main story.

As for growing the crops, you don’t actually need to do anything! After planting, just wait about 70 minutes or so and they will be fully grown. Then, just interact with them to collect the fruits of your labor!
In Summary
To finish up, let’s summarize everything you need to do quickly. Eliminate the threat in the Coastal Jungle, then discover Fertile Soil at the Ancient Farms in the Foothills. Use that to build Seedbeds.
Once you have Seedbeds, use the seeds you get from picking up wild crops. Plant them in your Seedbeds and wait about 70 minutes for them to fully grow. Then just reap what you sow, rinse and repeat!
So, as you can see, farming in Windrose is very useful if you wish to complete the game, but it’s also extremely simple. Don’t sleep on this feature, since it’s a great way to get plant-based resources.
