There is a lot to keep track of in Windrose, as expected of a survivalcrafting game, so it’s a good idea to know some of our best tips and tricks before you start.

After all, it’s easy to get overwhelmed when you first start the game. You’re also likely to get a bit annoyed at some things, such as the limited inventory, if you don’t know how to quickly circumvent the limitations.

In this guide, I’ll give you various tips to help you have the best start possible!

Improve Your Inventory and Storage

One of the first roadblocks you’re likely to encounter in Windrose is just how limiting your inventory management is early on. Thankfully, you can upgrade it pretty easily if you know where to look!

As soon as you’re able, craft a Stone Axe. It’ll require 3 Stones which you can pick up on the ground, and 3 Wood which you can get early on from bushes.

When you have acquired the Stone Axe, walk along the shore of whichever island you’re currently in. Look for shipwrecks and other bits of flotsam, then break them down with your Stone Axe.

By doing this, you’re likely to get Nails early, alongside more Wood. You can use 5 Nails and 10 Wood to craft Wooden Chests, which have a storage capacity of 28 slots. Much better than the starting Storage Baskets!

For your inventory, aim to craft a Torn Sailcloth Bag as your first upgrade. It requires 2 Coarse Fabrics and 1 Rope, both of which you can make at a Workbench with Plant Fiber from bushes and other plants.

Try to get these as early as possible and you’ll find inventory management much less painful overall!

Don’t Ignore Food Buffs

Despite being a survivalcrafting game, Windrose doesn’t have a traditional hunger system or anything like that. This can lead to you making the mistake of ignoring food, which provides large buffs!

You can cook food by making and placing a Cooking Fire. It merely requires 3 Stones and 3 Wood, so it’s something you can do quite early on.

Now, there are dozens of food recipes in this game, and what you can make depends on what resources you find. But the gist of it is that you should make sure to cook and eat some food!

Whenever you eat food, you get a Food Buff, depending on the type of food. Dodo Broth gives you more Maximum Health for 15 minutes, as a random example to go alongside the one shown above.

You can have up to 2 Food Buffs active at a time. Eating more food after that will replace the oldest buff with a new one.

Try to always have 2 Food Buffs active, as the stat increases can definitely help make things easier for you. Also, make sure to leave some food in your storage so you don’t drop it on death and can get your Food Buffs back!

Decorate Your Base, Get Comfy

Once you’ve set up a base of some sort anywhere in the world, you’ll want to start decorating it as soon as possible. For that, place items from the various categories in the Decoration section of your Building Panel.

Every Decoration provides +1 Comfort. You can’t stack items from the same category, however. For example, only 1 item from the Seating category will add to your Comfort at a time. Having 1 Stool is the same as having 2 Stools and 2 Benches!

That said, you’ll get a Rested buff whenever you stay at your base for a short time. This buff will make your Stamina regenerate faster, with the speed depending on your Comfort level. More Comfort equals faster Stamina regen.

In short, aim to have a lot of Decorations at your base. Having at least 1 from every single category will provide the most benefit, and the upgrade in Stamina regen is very noticeable.

Prebuilt Structures Are Very Helpful

This is a quick tip, but an important one early on. You can find premade buildings in the Prebuilt Structures category of your Building Panel, shown above.

These structures can help you set up a new base quickly. If you don’t feel like spending the time making a custom building, or you just need a temporary base, these premade buildings can save you a lot of time.

Prioritize Your Tools

Early on in the game, it is overall a better idea to focus on making and upgrade Tools. Your weapons are secondary, as you want to just be able to gather more resources more efficiently first.

Similarly, also make sure to get a Shovel as soon as you’re able to. It can be used to dig up treasures and other goodies, such as the hidden chests near Traveler’s Camps.

Another nice thing about focusing on Tools first is that it will also feed back to your weapons later on! By getting more tools, you can get more resources, so you can make better weapons down the line. Trust the process, basically.

Keep a Bell On You

As you explore the world, you might get Fast Travel Bells as loot. It’s decently common at POIs like Smuggler’s Caches and Abandoned Buccaneer Camps, for example.

The Fast Travel Bell allows you to craft Fast Travel Points. You can use those to quickly come and go from other places, making it quite convenient!

So, it’s a good idea to always carry 1 Fast Travel Bell in your inventory. Having it will allow you to quickly place a Fast Travel Point so you can return to your base to stock up or whatever you need while exploring.

You can always break down Fast Travel Points to recover the materials, too, including the Fast Travel Bell. It’s quite convenient!

Understanding Your Stats

Lastly, it’s important to note that your character has 6 main stats you can allocate however you wish as you level up. Here’s all of them and what they do, to help you plan your build:

  • Strength – Increases the damage you do with Clubs, Maces, and Halberds.
  • Agility – Increases the damage you do with Sabers, Greatswords, and Blunderbusses.
  • Precision – Increases the damage you do with Rapiers, Pistols, and Muskets.
  • Mastery – Increases your chance to land Critical Hits.
  • Vitality – Increases maximum Health.
  • Endurance – Increases maximum Stamina.

As you can see, stats are extremely straightforward in this game. So, it’s mainly important to pick between Strength, Agility, and Precision for your damage stat. That depends on your weapon and playstyle preference, of course!

Wrapping Up

There is a lot to do and see in Windrose, but I hope this guide will at least help you have the best start possible.

It should cut down on some of the main pain points you’re likely to experience as a beginner! For the rest, you’ll no doubt learn as you play the game, follow the main story quests, and explore the seas. Ahoy!
