Timber is one of the most important crafting resources during the mid-game in Windrose. Once you start upgrading your ship, crafting stronger cannons, or preparing to build a Frigate, you’ll burn through your supplies very quickly.

The problem is that you can’t really gather Timber directly. Instead, you have to unlock it first, then craft it manually from another material. This guide will tell you how and where you can get it.

How and Where to Get Timber in Windrose

Before you can get Timber, you’ll first need access to Hardwood by unlocking the Foothills in the Discovery tab. You can do that by defeating Thomas Richards, the Coastal Jungle Threat, as part of the game’s main quests.

Once you’ve done that, go to any Foothills biome island. Due to the game’s procedurally generated world, I can’t tell you exactly where they are, sadly. However, they can be found far from the starting Coastal Jungle islands.

At this point, you’ll also need to have a Copper Axe. I’d imagine you already have one if you’ve managed to defeat Thomas Richards, but it’s important. So, check out our guide on how to get Bronze Tools if need be.

As a reminder, you need to mine at least 15 Copper Ore, then smelt them into 5 Copper Ingots. Use the 5 Copper Ingots and 5 Wood at a Workbench to make a Copper Axe.

Next up, look for trees in the Foothills biome islands. You can either go for the new Divi-Divi trees or just look for stumps, whichever you find first! Then, chop them with your Iron Axe to get Hardwood. You’ll need 3 Hardwood per Timber.

Once you’ve gathered enough Hardwood to make some Timber, use a Workbench that has both the Sawhorse and Toolbox upgrades. With that setup, you can craft 1 Timber using 3 Hardwood!

Crafting Timber takes a bit of time, so it is usually better to gather Hardwood in bulk before returning to your base.

How to Farm Hardwood Quickly and Efficiently

If you only gather Hardwood casually, your Timber production will feel extremely slow later in the game.

Right now, the best strategy is to fully clear Divi-Divi groves on Foothills islands and rotate between multiple islands while waiting for respawns. Larger Foothills islands tend to have several clusters grouped together, which makes farming much faster.

A lot of players also overlook that Hardwood becomes available through merchant contracts after progressing further into the game.

Once unlocked, you can simply buy Hardwood directly. This can save you massive amounts of grinding when preparing for bigger ship upgrades.

With enough timber, you can use it for ship hull upgrades, cannon crafting, hull bracing upgrades, advanced repair kits, etc. As such, I highly recommend stockpiling Timber early instead of only farming it when a recipe suddenly requires dozens of pieces.

Final Thoughts

So, there you have it, that’s everything you need to do to get Timber in Windrose! Realistically, most of this is just setup, so you can start making loads of Timber when you have everything required. Just need to get the Hardwood, then.
