Tar is one of the dozens of materials you can gather as you explore the seas in Windrose.

It is also not one you can get early on at all, however! You can’t get it at all until you reach the third biome, in fact. Which is fitting, I guess, since it’s primarily used to make some late-game advanced crafting materials!

In this quick guide, I’ll tell you everything you need to know to gather Tar.

How and Where to Get Tar

To be able to get Tar, you’ll need to progress far enough into the game to reach the Cursed Swamps biome. That requires you to defeat the Coastal Jungle Threat and the Foothills Threat.

Like with previous biomes, you could potentially reach Cursed Swamps islands before actually defeating the local threats. However, you won’t be able to unlock Discoveries if you go there early, making the Tar useless.

Additionally, you’ll need an Iron Axe for this. You can make it at a Level 2 Workbench with 5 Foothills Iron Ingots and 5 Wood.

You most likely have an Iron Axe already by the time you reach the Cursed Swamps. Nonetheless, we have a guide on how to get Foothills Iron Ore as well, if you need it!

With that said, you’ll need to sail and look for Cursed Swamps islands. While their exact location is random due to the game’s procedural generation, they look a bit like the one in the map above. They have patches of swamp water that no previous islands had.

Once you find and reach a Cursed Swamps island, explore it and look for Tarwood Trees. Like the Divi-Divi trees you can get Hardwood from in the Foothills islands, Tarwood Trees are extremely common in Cursed Swamps.

Chop down those Tarwood Trees and you’ll get both Tar and Wood. Guess that’s where the name “Tarwood” comes from, huh? Nonetheless, that’s all there is to it!

So, now you know everything you need to do to get Tar in Windrose. It’s a fairly late-game material, considering it’s all the way in the third biome! But, at least it’s easy to get once you get there.
