Foothills Iron Ore in Windrose is one of those early game bottlenecks that trip up a lot of players. You will run past what looks like the right rocks, swing your pickaxe, and get absolutely nothing. The game does not tell you why, and most people end up wasting hours in the wrong zones.

The short answer is that iron is not available in the starting area. You need to unlock a specific region first, and there is a quest you have to finish before the game even lets you mine it. Once you meet those requirements, the ore is easy to find. Let me walk you through exactly what you need to do.

How to Unlock & Get Foothills Iron Ore

To be able to mine Foothills Iron Ore, you first need to clear the Coastal Jungle biome. You can do this by finishing the “Revenge is Best Served Cold” quest. This requires you to defeat the first boss of the game, a pirate captain named Thomas Richards. He is a tough fight that serves as a real test of your gear and patience. The key to beating him is patience, stamina management, and wearing the highest level gear you can craft.

If you haven’t gotten this quest yet, you first need to go through Dr. Galen‘s initial quests. Make sure you’ve completed his “I Need a Bigger Boat” questline. This will get you your first real ship and allow you to fully explore the region. Once you finish that and clear the Coastal Jungle by beating Richards, the path to the Foothills unlocks.

Once you have unlocked the Foothills region, you will need to explore it until you see a pickaxe icon appear on your map. That icon marks an Iron Deposit. I cannot give you an exact map location because the islands are procedurally generated, meaning every player gets a different layout. That said, finding an iron deposit should not be too hard. Make sure you have at least a Copper pickaxe equipped, as you can not mine it with a Stone pickaxe.

That’s It

Once you find a deposit, just start mining and the Foothills Iron Ore will drop straight into your inventory. Head back to your base and throw it into the smelter so you can finally craft those steel tools and better ship parts. Just keep your weapon ready while you are out there, because wolves and boars roam those hills and they love to interrupt you right when you are mid‑swing.
