Everwind just hit Steam Early Access and it does exactly what it promises, drops you on a floating island with a crashed ship nearby, points you vaguely at the sky, and lets you figure out the rest. The tutorial tower covers the bare basics, but once you step outside, the game expects you to work things out on your own. This is where a lot of players start losing time and resources early on.
I have put together some of the most useful tips I picked up in my time with the game, from airship building and combat to resource management and the things that are easy to overlook when you are just starting out.
Best Tips & Tricks for Beginners
Here are 14 tips and tricks covering various aspects of the game that should help you out a ton:
Tip #01 – Take Everything You Can Get Your Hands On
As you start out in the game, you will come across various types of resources and items. Most of which you won’t need at the moment. However, I highly suggest picking everything up and storing them for later use. As you unlock more recipes, you will need different resources to craft them. So, having them at hand will save you a lot of time.
Tip #02 – Explore Thoroughly
Every major location of the game or point of interest will have a lot of loot waiting to be collected. There will also be hidden rooms that you can find as well. Make sure to thoroughly search the area before you move on. This is also true for the tutorial tower area, you can find a lot of good starting loot there. The video below shows an example of a hidden room that is found in the tower.
Tip #03 – Don’t Break Locked Chests If You Can’t Open Them
During your exploration, you will find many chests that are locked. You will need a key to open them, which are often found nearby. Or you can also use a lockpick to open them, but this is based on chance.
You can easily run out of lockpicks before you open the chest. In this case, do not break it as it will not drop its contents. Most locked chests permanently disappear with their loot if they are destroyed. So, the better thing to do is come back later with more lockpicks or simply look for the chest key.
Tip #04 – Secret Loot If You Can Get Your Hands Dirty
In the open world of Everwind, you will come across many statues and gravestones. You can interact with them to learn more about them. But the interesting thing here is that you can dig beneath them to find chests and wooden coffins containing loot.
Tip #05 – A Good Place To Look For Ores
After you are done exploring the top side of a floating island, make sure to check the underside as well. A lot of players skip this entirely but the bottom of most floating islands is lined with ore deposits just waiting to be mined, making it one of the more reliable ways to stock up on ores.

Tip #06 – Make Good Use Of The Spyglass
To make exploration easy, the game gives you a special tool called the Spyglass. It is something that you will be using a lot throughout your journey. It allows you to zoom in on distant islands to see what kind of biomes they have. On top of that, the Spyglass also indicates if you have explored that island before or not, making it easy to keep track of which islands you have already visited.
One more thing, when you are looking at an island through the spyglass, you will notice a castle-like icon on the right side of your spyglass interface. If this icon lights up when pointed at an island, it means that island has a special point of interest. This could be a boss fight, a hidden dungeon, or something else worth checking out. But this is where the rarest loot in the game is usually found so make sure to explore them whenever you get the chance to.

Tip #07 – Most Useful Skills To Invest In Early On
The other useful tool that the game gives early on alongside the Spyglass is the Compass. You can use the Compass to scan various items in the world to unlock their crafting recipes. And you can further increase the usefulness of the compass by investing in the Life Detection skill. This will allow you to detect nearby living creatures up to a certain range depending on how upgraded the skill is. I recommend getting this skill as early as possible as it will make detecting enemies a breeze.

The next skill I recommend getting is also related to the Compass, called Area Scan. This allows you to quickly scan your surrounding area to locate resources, chests, or other points of interest. Both of the skills I mentioned above are found in the Engineer category of skills.

Tip #08 – Quickly Teleporting Back To The Ship
The Compass is not only used for scanning enemies and objects, it also doubles as a fast travel tool that lets you teleport straight back to your ship. Once you are done with an island, you can be back on your ship in a matter of seconds.
Tip #09 – Your Mini Flying Fortress
The most unique thing I found in Everwind when compared to games of the same genre is the airship. Your airship is basically your main base that has the ability to fly and move around. The game also allows you to expand the area of your airship by using blocks up to a specific limit.
I would advise not to get carried away with this in the beginning of the game as it will increase the weight of the airship, which will negatively affect its mobility. There is a limit to how much weight the engines can carry, so I recommend keeping your airship light and only using wood blocks if you need to.
Tip #10 – Saving Fuel
Your airship does not run on air and will require resources such as wood to make it keep going. If the airship runs out of fuel midair, it will slowly start descending and will land in a random location. This is not ideal as you will have to waste more resources to get the airship back in the air. So, always stock up on fuel when you stop on an island.
One more tip I have for you here is that whenever you are crafting or doing something else on your ship, turn off the engines to save up on fuel. Even when stationary, the airship will consume fuel if the engines are still running.
Tip #11 – Keep Repair Kits Handy
You will learn how to repair weapons and tools early on in the game. You can repair your gear by using a Repair Kit which you can craft directly from your inventory. Whenever you go out to explore, make sure to take a couple of Repair Kits with you. Tools breaking in the middle of an exploration can be very annoying and time consuming if you don’t have a Repair Kit available. One more thing to keep in mind is that Repair Kits will be more efficient if they are used on an Anvil.
Tip #12 – Don’t Spam Food Or Potions
When you lose HP, you can recover it by eating food or drinking a potion. But unlike some games, where you instantly get your health back after eating food, here it takes some time for the food or potion to heal you. So spamming them will not help you recover faster. Instead, it will only waste your resources.
When you eat a food item, you will get a duration icon on top of your health bar indicating how much time is required for the item to finish healing. This is a pretty simple thing but can be very easy to miss.
Tip #13 – Water Is Your Friend
If you find yourself in a fight you can’t win or are being chased by enemies, jumping into the water is a reliable way to get yourself out of trouble. Most enemies can’t swim and will not follow you in, which gives you enough breathing room to recover and come up with a better plan. It is a simple trick, but one that has saved me a couple of times.
Tip #14 – Best Way To Make Coins
If you are someone like me, you loot everything you can get your hands on and will eventually end up with a lot of items that you don’t need. The best use for these items is selling them to the Merchants you find on islands. These merchants will pretty much buy everything you sell them.
There is a limit to how much gold a single merchant has on them, but luckily, an island will have multiple merchants, so that is not a problem. By selling items like this, you can make a lot of coins pretty fast. Just make sure not to accidentally buy an item back as it will cost a lot more than what you sold it for.

Wrapping Up
That covers all the tips I have picked up so far in Everwind and hopefully they save you some of the trial and error that comes with jumping into a game that does not explain itself particularly well. The early hours are the roughest part but once you have the basics down, the game opens up a lot.
Everwind is still in Early Access, so expect things to change and improve over time, but the fundamentals covered here should serve you well regardless of where the game goes from here.
