Rogue Trader is an extremely deep and complex RPG, after all. Every little bit of information helps to make things more manageable!
In this article, we’ll give you some key tips and tricks that you should know to make your exploration of the Koronus Expanse easier.
Tips & Tricks for Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader
Movement Tips
Movement in Rogue Trader has some quirks that you should be aware of. Some of them are unique to this game, while others are fairly common in games with tactical RPG combat.
The first quirk is that you can’t move at all after performing an attack. Make sure you reposition your units before attacking, if you need it.
The second quirk is that some character Archetypes, such as the Warrior, have a Charge ability. This ability acts as an attack, so it doesn’t consume movement points.
An interesting thing about the Charge, though, is that you can do it even if you don’t actually target an enemy. This allows characters with Charge to cover some extra distance!
Additionally, it’s highly recommended to pick up talents that grant you extra movement distance. Talents like Swift Movement are always welcome, no matter which Archetype your character plays!
Lastly, you can actually preview attacks without moving. Instead of double-clicking a tile to move your character, click just once. Then, you can choose any of your abilities and aim it where you wish.
This will allow you to preview the chances to hit and the like from the tile you clicked on. It’s extremely helpful to use this preview before committing to moving!
Don’t Overuse The Warp
Psykers are extremely powerful “space wizard” types of units, and we love them for it. However, their powerful abilities come at a cost.
Every time a Psyker casts a spell, they will degrade the Veil. This is represented by the purple gauge on the bottom left of the screen.
This gauge is shared by your entire party, as well, so having multiple Psykers in your party can fill it up quickly!
What happens when the Veil degrades? You drastically increase the chances of the “Perils of the Warp” triggering. Ideally, you should avoid having firsthand experience with this phenomenon!
“Perils of the Warp” causes a random effect every time, but all of them are negative. These can range from debuffs to instant death for your Psykers. Sometimes monstrous Warp entities will spawn to attack you.
In short, just be mindful of not overusing Psykers’ abilities!
Friendly Fire Is Always On
Something you should always keep in mind is that you can damage your allies if they’re in the range of an AoE attack. This can be disastrous if you aren’t careful!
Thankfully, you can preview the range of AoE attacks when selecting them. If possible, just try to get the units in the way to move before you do the attack.
Some other times, though, there’s nothing you can do about it. When this happens, you should just carefully ponder if the attack is still worth going through with or not.
This is going to depend on a case-by-case basis, but sometimes it’s better to damage your allies slightly if it means you get to finish off the enemies surrounding them!
Be Cunning: Sneak!
There are few things worse in Rogue Trader than to be caught off guard. Ambushes can be devastating, as the enemies will get to act before you do.
But two can play at that game! You should use sneak attacks yourself to ambush enemies.
Whenever you’re exploring, take it slow and make sure to check your surroundings for hiding enemies. If you spot them, switch over to a character with ranged weapons and take the first shot!
There is really no reason not to do sneak attacks, truth be told. Even if you don’t instantly kill one enemy, you will at least damage them and make combat easier. It also guarantees you get the first turn.
Equip Two Weapon Sets
The majority of characters in Rogue Trader can equip two different weapon sets. Each set can have either one large two-handed weapon or any combination of two small weapons.
You can swap between both weapon sets anytime you want during combat, making your characters more versatile. Adaptability is always key in combat scenarios!
There’s no penalty to having two weapon sets equipped either, so make sure you take advantage of them to make your team as versatile as possible.
