Throne and Liberty is a promising new free-to-play MMORPG, but it has had some players worried about its implementation of “Pay to Win” systems.

The MMORPG genre is sadly no stranger to awful monetization practices, especially when it comes to so-called “free-to-play” games. Will Throne and Liberty strike a good balance for free players?

In this short article, we look into Throne and Liberty’s monetization systems and decide just how necessary it is to spend money to win.

Is Throne and Liberty Pay to Win?

Throne and Liberty is, currently, definitely pay-to-win (P2W).

Unless you have infinite amounts of time, you’ll need to spend real money if you really want to finish up your build. Getting everything by yourself in-game is just not realistic…

The game has two main currencies, Lucent and Sollant. Out of these two, Lucent is the “Premium” currency, which you can buy with real money.

You can then spend your Lucent at the in-game marketplace, which allows you to buy gear and upgrade materials from other players. Of course, you can also list your own items to earn some Lucent.

That said, there are definitely some pieces of gear that can’t be sold. It being a player-ran economy also means that players will need duplicates of their best items if they want to sell them.

Nonetheless, it’s still ultimately possible to purchase all of the best-in-slot equipment, as well as the materials to upgrade them.

Besides the materials and gear, you can also buy traits directly. These traits can be applied to weapons, giving them extra effects. They will be the biggest money sink in the game!

You will also require multiples of each trait to upgrade them. Getting them all without spending Lucent is not going to be realistically viable, sadly.

All of these rare items will also become more commonplace in the Marketplace as more players get into the game, exponentially increasing the ability to just buy the best and rarest gear in the game.

There is also a purchasable Battle Pass, which will give you items and materials to help get you a boost, further adding to the game’s P2W systems.

Ultimately, Throne and Liberty has a lot of systems that favor P2W. Spending real money on Lucent is highly incentivized, especially in the endgame!

Venezuelan gamer cursed by being interested by most games, resulting in a ridiculous backlog he’ll never be able to conquer. Been gaming for over two decades now! Few things exemplify his wide variety in gaming tastes as the fact that he’s a big fan of both Souls games and the Atelier series at the same time. Also a big fan of Yakuza/Like a Dragon, Deadly Premonition, Zero Escape, and Dead Rising, among others. Considers Lost Judgment and Sekiro to both be masterpieces.
