Aska can be an extremely challenging game to get into, even if you are someone who plays a lot of survival games. How you start out in this game is extremely important, as not knowing what to do will lower your chances of survival.

Our complete beginner’s guide will be looking at everything you need to know going into the game. So without further delay, let’s get into it.

Complete Beginner’s Guide

Character Creation

Before you jump into the game, you will need to create your character. There are 2 different characters in Aska, a male character and a female one. The male character is called Ragnar, and the female one Aska. Both of them have different stats, so what you choose will come down to what stats you prefer.

the Ragnar character

Ragnar is a beefy fighter with extremely high Vitality, Strength, and Cold Resistance. It is also important to note that Ragnar will need more food and water than Aska.

the Aska character

Aska on the other hand has better Stamina, Dexterity, Intelligence, and Perception. She also needs less food and water to survive in game.

So which one should you choose?

Well, both of them are very good in their own way. If you are someone who values hand-to-hand combat and high resistance, then Ragnar is the one to go for. For players who prefer ranged weapons and good mobility, then Aska is the better choice. You will be able to level up your chosen characters’ in game.

You can also change the appearance of your character in the character creation area.

Basic Needs (Food, Water, and Warmth)

The 3 basic needs

As soon as you spawn into the game, you will be able to see 3 icons to the left of your screen showing you how well your character is fed, hydrated, and warm. Ideally, you will want each of these to stay full, as your survival depends on it.

So, how do you keep them full?

Food

Food is an essential resource in Aska that you will regularly need to consume to stay well-fed. Early on, you will not be able to hunt, so most of the food that you eat will have to be raw.

There are plenty of foods that you can eat raw in Aska. All you have to do is gather them and eat them from your inventory. Grapes are a good example for this, as they can be gathered directly from a Grape bush. You can check out our guide on the best early-game foods in Aska for more on that.

Foods like Grapes can only stay in your inventory for a short time, as food in this game will go bad if not properly preserved.

Water

Like food, you will need plenty of water to stay well hydrated in this game. You can find water in this game through natural water sources, or by collecting it yourself.

A Natural Water Collector in Aska

There are plenty of different natural sources of water in this game. the Natural Water Collector is an example of one, as it can give you a decent amount of water.

Other than natural sources, you can also make structures that will let you collect your own water. The first water structure that you can build is the Rain Collector. The Rain Collector will normally be more than enough water for you for survival purposes. Of course, as more villagers join your clan, you will need more sources of water.

Water in this game can be stored, or you can directly drink it from the source.

Warmth

The last basic need in Aska is warmth. To stay warm in this game, you will need a fire to keep you warm, and some shelter.

You can light up a Simple Fire to get warmth.

The first structure that you can build for a fire is a Simple Fire. As the name suggests, this is just a basic fire that will keep you warm when you are next to it. The Simple Fire is a one-time use structure, so once the fire runs out, you will need to build another one. For a more permanent option, you can go for the more advanced Campfire.

Shelters will help keep your character safe and warm in Aska.

For shelter, you can start off by building a basic Shelter. This is enough for you to sleep under a roof. You can unlock and build much better shelters later on in the game.

Building a Base

With the basic survival needs out of the way, it’s time to build a base.

A wide open space, indicating an ideal location for a base.

For your base, the first thing that you need to consider is where to build it. Location is very important when building a base, as a bad location can really hurt you later on in the game.

The most important thing to consider here is what resources are close to your base. Having resources nearby will make your life much easier in the beginning and save you a lot of time. Other than that, it’s also important to look at how close enemies are to you from your location. You don’t want enemies to be too far away, as they can also help you get some very valuable items.

Once you are happy with the location of your base, you can then start building it. Most of your early structures are going to be essential resources that you absolutely need to have for survival. Structures like Furnaces and Forges are good examples of early game structures that can help you further advance your game.

Recruiting Villagers

Aska allows you to build your own village, and to do that, you will need villagers.

You can get villagers using the Eye of Odin structure. To use it, you will first need to build it and place it where your base is.

5 Jotun Blood needed to activate the Eye of Odin.

Opening up the Eye of Odin will show you 5 empty boxes to your right with Activate under them. Using the Eye of Odin will require you to have 5 Jotun Blood’s, a valuable item that you can find all across the game’s map. There are 2 different ways in which Jotun Blood can be acquired.

Blue crystals that give you Jotun Blood

The first is by collecting shiny blue crystals you will occasionally run into. These crystals can be gathered by going up to them and pressing the gather button.

Rock you can mine to get Jotun Blood.

Other than that, you can also mine Jotun Blood from rocks with a blue shine to them. The image above shows what that looks like in game. Mining in this game requires you to have a pickaxe, which is a craftable tool in this game.

You will need to choose between 2 villagers based on the attributes they possess.

After collecting the Jotun Blood and putting it into the Eye of Odin, the game will give you 2 different villagers, and you must choose one to make them a part of your village. You can see the various attributes each villager possesses. Hover over the attributes to see what they do.

Accommodating Villagers

It is your responsibility to accommodate the villagers that you recruit in this game. You are responsible for their shelter, food, and water. It’s fairly easy to accommodate early villagers, as you won’t need that many resources. It will become harder later on though as you will need better structures at your base to take care of your growing population.

You can integrate villagers you recruit into your society to help you with the various tasks around your village. Take blacksmithing, for example, Aska has a very tedious blacksmithing process. Villagers that you recruit can learn blacksmithing and take over as your blacksmith. Eventually, you can recruit enough villagers to cover all the work needed in your village.

A good start in Aska will help make transitioning into the later stages of the game much easier. If you are new to Aska, check out our guide on how to blacksmith in Aska.
