Gondian Zanner Toobin is one of the many characters that you can meet in Baldur’s Gate 3. Additionally, he’s a key character of the “Disable the Steel Watch” quest.
However, he’s not immortal by any means, so he can perish before you finish the quest. But then, how can you finish the quest without his help!?
Don’t lose hope, it’s not as bad as it seems! Read on and we’ll tell you what to do in case Toobin died prematurely.
What to Do if Toobin is Dead in Baldur’s Gate 3
First things first, you have to find poor Tobin’s corpse. This depends on where he died exactly, but he should be within the Steel Watch Foundry at this point in the game.
Once you locate his body, pray that it’s relatively intact!
If it is, use the Speak With Dead spell on his corpse and you’ll be able to communicate with him.
Next, ask him about how to destroy the Steel Watch. He’ll tell you about inputting a code, Nebelun, into the Neurocitor. Also ask him what to do after you input the code, just in case.
Additionally, you can be a little sassy and ask him how he is. It’s not good for much, but it’s pretty amusing!
With that done, you should now be able to complete the “Disable the Steel Watch” quest.
However, as we implied before, his body might not be intact. If the poor guy got gored, you’ll be unable to use the Speak With Dead spell. Though of course, you might also simply not have the spell to begin with.
It’s not the end of the world yet, though, so there’s still a workaround for this!
What to Do if You Can’t Use Speak With Dead on Toobin’s Corpse
If Toobin can’t help you, it’s time to seek another NPC to help you out instead: Wulbren Bongle.
At this point in the game, Wulbren Bongle should be hidden in a cave off Wyrm’s Crossing. That is, as long as you rescued him previously.
The map above shows the cave’s location, which is pretty easy to reach. You can either fly from the nearby town or follow the dirt path shown on the map.
Just go inside the cave and talk with Wulbren, then ask him for help disabling Steel Watch. It’s quite simple!
But, of course, this relies on you having helped Wulbren in the previous two Acts of the game. What, then, if you didn’t?
Disable Steel Watch Without Any Help
Toobin is dead and you didn’t care to rescue Wulbren previously, so now you’re at an impasse. What to do now!? Thankfully, there’s a third method as a failsafe.
Start off by finding Toobin’s corpse again. This time, just loot it and pick up the journal that reads “Property of Zanner Toobin”.
Read this book to learn that only Gond’s true name can destroy the Neurocitor. Now you just need to figure out what that name is! Thankfully, it’s written in a book nearby.
Head to the Lab Level of Steel Watch Foundry and make your way to the rightmost side of the map. Just in case, the coordinates are around X: 1939 and Y: 442.
Once there, you should spot a small library with a zombie. Be very careful dealing with the zombie, avoid using any AoE attacks! They might damage the library, which will damage the book you need.
Either way, approach the bookshelf in the small library and pick up the “The Many Faces of Gond” book. Read it to learn Gond’s true name: Nebelun.
That’s it, now you can go destroy the Neurocitor without needing the help of either Toobin or Wulbren!
