If you can’t figure out which classes to focus on in John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, our tier list might help you out.

There are 4 different classes in Toxic Commando, each one bringing something different to the table. They serve the usual roles of DPS, tank, and support, though there are some that serve as hybrids.

Read on and I’ll tell you how I rank the classes from best to worst and why.

Classes Ranked From Best to Worst | John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando Tier List

  • S – The Operator, The Defender
  • A – The Strike
  • B – The Medic

Explaining the Rankings

The Operator

Operator driving with drone out | John Carpenter's Toxic Commando

A very versatile class that’s primarily meant to be a DPS class, but also offers a lot of great utility. The Operator is a jack of all trades, master of some!

The main draw for The Operator class is the ever-helpful Drone. This is your ability, which allows you to summon a small drone that hovers around you and attacks enemies automatically.

While the Drone can feel a bit underwhelming at first, it really starts to shine once you get some upgrades by leveling up your class! You can massively increase its damage, give it elemental rounds, and make it stick around longer.

What’s more, you can also get upgrades that make the Drone do other functions. Things like repairing vehicles or even helping revive your allies. There’s nothing it can’t do, thanks to its versatile play style and skill tree.

The other thing The Operator excels at is simply using vehicles. Certain upgrades can make vehicles more resilient or allow you to repair them passively.

These do come at the cost of higher fuel consumption, though… but you also get upgrades to reduce fuel consumption. So, you can potentially offset it, anyway!

Overall, this is a very strong class that has no particular weakness and works well in every scenario. Easy pick for the top spot here!

The Defender

Defender with barrier out | John Carpenter's Toxic Commando

The Defender is a sort of tank and support hybrid. Not only is it a resilient class, but it also extends that resilience to teammates.

As The Defender, you get access to the Barrier ability. Use it to deploy a dome-shaped shield that blocks ranged attacks and damages enemies that enter it.

The exact way the Barrier works can be played with depending on your selected upgrades as you level up. A notable one is Osmosis, which makes allies regen extra ability energy whenever enemies die inside the barrier!

Another notable upgrade is Aegis, which makes the barrier follow The Defender. And I also greatly recommend Rupture, which doubles the damage dealt to enemies within the barrier.

For extra survivability, The Defender can also get Energy Armor upgrades. These provide temporary armor to all allies within the bubble. I really meant it when I said The Defender extends their resilience to the team!

All in all, The Defender is a fantastic tank/support that I feel is essential on higher difficulties. Their potential to negate damage while simultaneously weakening enemies is just incredible.

The Strike

Strike using Fireball | John Carpenter's Toxic Commando

This is the pure, straightforward DPS class, in contrast to The Operator’s more utility-oriented role in the team.

The Strike’s main ability is Fireball. As the name implies, this allows you to shoot Fireballs from your left hand. These explode for decent damage in a wide radius. Pretty simple, but also effective!

As you might imagine, there are a good few upgrades that can make the Fireball even better. Blast Radius makes the explosions larger, while Supernova can make them set the blast radius on fire.

Your main thing to keep in mind as The Strike is your ability energy generation. Ideally, you want to be using Fireball as much as possible. Thankfully, there are a lot of upgrades that make you regen more energy or even just consume less of it.

The main drawback to The Strike, when compared to the higher tiers, is just that it’s not very versatile. As I said before, it really is just a straight DPS class!

The Strike does a lot of damage, but not much else. This is certainly not a bad thing in Toxic Commando, but it’s why I put it below The Operator and The Defender.

The Medic

Medic using a healing mist | John Carpenter's Toxic Commando

On paper, you’d think The Medic would be higher up. After all, it is the only class that’s centered around healing, which should be important for your team, right? Well, yes, it is, but not as much as you would think.

To start, The Medic’s starting ability is Healing Aura. It has a very limited range and requires other players to be near The Medic to receive the healing effect over time. This makes it a bit annoying to use effectively.

That said, you can get upgrades to increase the healing and range of the Healing Aura. Plus, The Medic can use Healing Aura to revive themselves, too.

Some of The Medic’s later abilities are better for providing healing, however, such as Remote Treatment. This allows The Medic to heal allies from a distance.

Now, the main issue with The Medic is just that it’s a bit outdone by the other classes. Primarily, healing isn’t an absolute necessity when The Defender can massively mitigate incoming damage when played effectively.

Plus, of course, The Medic lacks the damage output of the pure “DPS” classes like The Strike and The Operator.

Lastly, there’s also the fact that this is the only class that I feel is just useless when playing solo. I mean, you should really be playing multiplayer in this type of game, but that’s important to note!

Ultimately, I don’t think The Medic is useless by any means, really. I’d even recommend having one when learning the higher difficulties! But, I just think it’s overall the weakest of the 4 classes.

Wrapping Up

Overall, I think The Operator and The Defender are the two best classes for sure. The Operator is a versatile DPS that has great utility, while The Defender can help with survivability and also weaken enemies.

After them, The Strike is a close third. It’s a bit overly simplistic and lacks utility, since it’s a pure DPS class. But the damage is fantastic, so it does help clear the hordes with ease!

For the last spot I have The Medic. The Medic’s healing abilities can help while learning the game, but do not make up for the lack of damage output. Especially when The Defender can weaken enemies while mitigating damage for the team.

So, there you have it! That’s my tier list ranking the classes in John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando from best to worst. Want more help with this game? Well, we can help you adjust the FOV!
