John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando throws you into a mutant infested apocalypse with minimal hand holding, a short tutorial and then straight into the chaos. Between managing four classes, avoiding toxic sludge pools that will slow you to a crawl, and keeping up with objectives while hundreds of enemies swarm you at once, there is a lot going on that the game does not explain particularly well.
In this guide, I will cover some of the most useful things I have picked up while playing Toxic Commando, from small mechanical tricks that save you in a pinch to broader strategies that make your runs significantly smoother overall.
13 Best Tips & Tricks For Beginners
Below are 13 tips and tricks that will help you out a lot in the game:
Tip #01 – Mobility
If you check out your gun stats, you will notice that it has a mobility stat as well. This means that some weapons will slow down your movement significantly. So, whenever in a bind or moving through sludge, switch to your handgun to move faster. Handguns have some of the fastest mobility in the game.
Tip #02 – Reloading Weapons
You can cancel your weapon reload by using your bash melee attack (pushback). There is no stamina cost to this. So, keep this in mind when you end up reloading at the wrong time. Such as when you are getting swarmed by zombies.
Also, reloading a completely empty magazine takes more time than one which has some bullets left in it. There are different animations for both.
Tip #03 – Vehicles
There are different vehicles in the game which you can drive. You take significantly less damage when inside a vehicle. The turrets available on top of vehicles deal a great amount of damage, very useful in taking out high HP enemies like slobs or goons. Make sure to take full advantage of vehicles whenever you get the chance to. One more thing, you can also use vehicles to block paths for zombies. In some missions, this can make some of the objectives very easy to complete.

Tip #04 – Weapon Prestige
If there’s a weapon you like and want to prestige it to unlock various cosmetic rewards, then do not bother unlocking attachments for it or upgrading its tier level, as all of this will reset when you prestige that weapon. You can prestige most weapons to purple (Prestige III) and special weapons to gold (Prestige IV).
There is actually a way to farm XP much faster for your weapons so you can quickly prestige them to the next level. You can learn more about it through this: Weapon XP Farm (Fast Prestige) Guide.
Tip #05 – Making Quick Work of Slobs
If you are having trouble with slobs, then you can look towards The Operator class. In The Operator’s skill tree, you can unlock a skill called Lancer. This allows your drone to fire a strong beam that is capable of easily taking down a slob. So, whenever a slob is around, just use this skill and it will automatically take care of it.
Tip #06 – The Medic Heal Cancel
In The Medic class, you get the Healing Aura ability, which allows you to heal yourself and your teammates. After upgrading it through the skill tree, it becomes really powerful. To the point that having it on for like a second or two is enough to get a complete heal. So, whenever you use this ability, quickly cancel it. This way, you will save more than 50% of the cooldown timer, allowing you to heal again very soon.

Tip #07 – Resources are Shared
Any resources you or your teammates pick up will be shared across the team. If you pick up sludgite or spare parts, your teammates will automatically receive them as well. This is helpful to know so that you don’t need to rush to pick something up before your teammates do. Sludge Seeds are the only exception to this rule, as those are independent pickups and each player needs to collect their own.
Tip #08 – Max Resource Capacity
There is a limit to how many resources you can hoard. So, when your resources are near the capacity limit, I recommend making use of them before jumping into a mission. Imagine finishing a mission only to realize that your resources are already at max capacity. Trust me, you don’t want that. The max capacity limit of each resource is given below:
- Sludgite: 100K
- Residium: 10K
- Mortite: 300
Tip #09 – Leveling Up Classes Faster
The best missions to farm class XP are The Pit and Deliver Us of ACT 3. Those missions have a ton of roamers to easily kill in very compact areas. When played on hard difficulty, you can expect to earn up to 30K XP each run. You can learn more about this through my dedicated class XP farming guide.
Tip #10- Gas Cans Spawn Infinitely
If you end up destroying a gas can that you needed by mistake, then do not worry. These gas cans spawn again in three minutes after being destroyed.

Tip #11 – Spare Parts
Spare parts are one of the most valuable resources to have in the game. They are used for a variety of things such as repairing broken down cars, opening weapon cases, etc. In each mission, you can get a maximum of 4 spare parts (that is a total of 16 uses if we count all four members in a team). However, in the starting mission, this is limited to a max cap of 2 spare parts (8 uses if there are 4 members).
You can easily find some of the spare parts through your map. These are denoted by a yellow gear icon. The ones shown on the map are lying in open areas which you can directly pick up. But the map will not show the location of spare parts that are hidden inside other objects such as a car. You will have to look around for those yourself.

Now you might be wondering when is the best time to use spare parts. I recommend saving your spare parts for the final moments of a mission, as that is when you will need them most. The closing sections of most missions are where the difficulty spikes and having those spare parts available can make a huge difference.
Tip #12 – Roamers’ Main Weakness
Roamers are the most common enemy you will run into in Toxic Commando and fortunately, they are the easiest to deal with. A single headshot from any gun will drop them regardless of the weapon’s damage or the difficulty you are playing on. Their body health will scale up with difficulty but they can still be single tapped if you shoot them in the head. So keep aiming for the head and you can plow through entire hordes without breaking a sweat.
Tip #13 – Self Revive on Demand
This is probably my favorite trick in the game right now. You can use the stimulant combat gear to revive yourself when you are incapacitated. Combine this with skills like Combatant IV (of The Striker class) which allows you to carry four extra grenades or mines (also stimulants). With that, you will have five stimulants available and you can self revive up to five times.
And what’s even more interesting is that you can refill these stimulants through the Combat Gear box. Meaning you can self revive as much as you want throughout the mission.

That’s It!
That covers some of the most useful tips and tricks to help you get a better grip on John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando. A lot of these are things the game never tells you directly, so knowing them going in puts you at a real advantage over players who are still figuring it out the hard way.
Toxic Commando is a lot more enjoyable once you have these fundamentals down, so get out there and start putting them to use!
