Weapon XP is one of the most important progression systems in John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando, so it’s important to know how it works.
The game itself doesn’t really tell you the specifics. It basically just tells you that using a weapon will make you get XP with it. This isn’t wrong or anything like that, but there’s more at work here than just that…
In this guide, I’ll tell you everything I know about how Weapon XP is handled in this game.
How Does Weapon XP Work?

First of all, the most basic aspect of Weapon XP is that you get 20 XP for every single kill. This seems not to change at all based on enemy type or anything, it’s always 20.
As you might instantly assume, this does mean that the best way to rack up Weapon XP is to kill hordes of weak enemies. Conveniently, that’s mostly what you’re doing in this game!
Sadly, though, this also means you don’t get more Weapon XP from killing special sludge monsters. Difficulty also seems to have no effect. As far as I can tell, at least, everything just gives the static 20 XP.
On top of that, you’re also limited: you can only get 3000 Weapon XP per mission. This cap is per weapon, however. It’s not cap on the total of all Weapon XP you get.
So, for some simple math, you need 150 kills with a single weapon to reach the 3000 Weapon XP cap on it. Even with how large the hordes get, 150 kills with a single weapon is nothing to scoff at!
It’s also worth noting that you keep your Weapon XP even if you fail or quit a mission. Not even the sludge can take your hard-earned XP away from you.
In short, you get 20 Weapon XP per kill and each weapon has a 3000 Weapon XP limit per mission. It’s as simple as that!
How Does Prestige Work?

Once you get a weapon to its max level, you’ll have the ability to Prestige it. You can Prestige a weapon up to 3 times, getting it to the Prestige III rank.
When you confirm a Prestige, your weapons’ Level, Tier, and attachments will all be reset. However, you’ll unlock a new skin for the weapon, so you can show off the results of your grind.
Sadly, though, Prestige provides no gameplay benefits. You do not get an increase to Weapon XP gain, and your weapon does not gain any performance buffs of any kind.
So, Prestige is purely cosmetic, as you unlock new skins for your weapon and nothing else. If you don’t care about these skins, I’d recommend just ignoring Prestiges entirely. No need to grind Weapon XP again if you just keep it maxed out!
With Prestige out of the way, though, that’s all you need to know about how Weapon XP works in John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando! In short, 20 XP per kill with a 3000 cap for each weapon per mission. Prestige at max level for cosmetics, up to 3 times.
Now that you know how Weapon XP and Prestige work, do you want to grind it out? Well, we can help speed up the process! Check out our guide on a fast Weapon XP farming method.
