One of the many animals in Way of the Hunter that you have to hunt is the Elk. The game will task you with hunting one in order to complete the Elk Stew Bourguignon mission. Luckily, it’s not that hard to find one in the wild.

In this guide, I’ll show you where you can find an Elk out there in the wild.

The Elk, or more specifically the Rocky Mountain Elk, is one of the larger and more rewarding species in Nez Perce Valley.

If you check the in-game encyclopedia, you’d learn that Rocky Mountain Elk are found in Nez Perce Valley and Matariki Park, with primary habitat in highland and some lowland forests.

One reliable for hunting them is around Yi’s Cabin near the She Devil Mountains area of Nez Perce Valley. Animals will often patrol lakes and river edges in that general region. You can frequently glass elk from elevated ground around She Devil.

Another spot is Haliwitch Lake.

Down in the Haliwitch area, you’ll find a lake southwest of the fast travel point where multiple elk herds can be spotted consistently. Sometimes, you’ll see big groups with good trophy males.

There’s also the lakes to the north of campsite and watering spots.

Elk tend to gravitate around water sources in the western half of the map, especially close to high ground overlooking those water bodies.

The Elk aren’t tied to a single static spawn like some other animals. Instead, they use need zones that shift over time but stay within typical habitat zones on the map.

Tracking need zones you’ve already uncovered is generally the fastest way to find them.

Moreover, Elk will come to drink at water at specific times during the day. Plan your stalks around that if you want the easiest approach angle and clean shots.

When hunting Elk, you want to approach their areas slow and low, using binoculars to glass far hillsides and lake edges before you commit to a stalk.

It’s worth noting that Elk spook hard. In fact, even a crouched run can get them alerted. So, mix still-hunting with periods of waiting and calling.

If you’ve struggled to consistently find a herd, try to unlock the private Haliwitch area, then glass the meadows that slope down toward the lakes around 08:00 to 10:00 when they often head to drink.
